Elderly hamster and long claws

Our much loved little hamster is 2 years 4 months and his claws have become very long. He does have wooden things in his cage but has never used them to keep his claws short and sharp like cats do (our first hamster so not sure if hamsters ever do this). Should we try to cut his claws, take him to a vet to have them done or leave him alone? It doesn't seem to impact him too much, except maybe when he's taking stored food out of his pouches.
