setting up a tank for new gerbils

My ds is getting gerbils for his 12th birthday. We haven't got them yet but are setting up the tank for them. I am avoiding plastic as we don't like the idea of them ingesting it so everything we're putting in should be safe to chew. Tank is going to have about 6" digging area in the bottom. I can't make it any deeper as it has glass doors at that height. We are putting in some platforms and a metal wheel for them too. next on my list to get are some ladders to get to and from platforms and digging area. Tank is currently 18 "high, 18 " deep and 18" wide but we plan to extend it up with a wire topper so it will end up 36" high.

Does this sound ok?

I have a couple of questions.

Are conkers wired together ok for them?
Should I set up some cardboard tunnels with the wood shavings and peat on top of them with some loose toilet rolls on top for them before I put them in?
Would I be better with 2 or 3 gerbils?

Thanks for any advice. we would like to get the tank right so we end up with active happy pets.

I wouldn't have thought conkers were suitable, I thought they were poisonous. Also, make sure the wheel doesn't have gaps as the gerbils legs or tail can get trapped. Everything else sounds like gerbil heaven.

They need a place to go for sleep or when they want to be quiet. We have one made from twigs which can be bent into a shelter, from PAH.

They are such cute, funny little furries, have fab personalities, and they will be your best friends in exchange for a treat. Our girl loves apple, grapes, gerbil chocolate and a small pieces of biscuit.

All you need now is a cute name!!
