Do hamster make a noise?

I've just popped into DSs room and the hamster was awake. She came over to see me and was making a little squeaky sound continuously.

I took her out of the cage and gave her a little fuss and cuddle and she seemed her usual lively self - sniffing and walking about but the noise continued.

It's just a little squeaky noise. I'm worried it's her breathing as I've never heard her make a sound before? Do they make noises? Could she be calling for a mate (female cat used to do that) or does she need to go to the vet?

Ours does this occasionally. She is a Syrian hamster.

Oh, thank you. She's a Syrian too. Worrying as I have to go out and won't be back for a couple of hours.

Some hamsters do. It depends on the type of hamster and the hamster itself, really. Our last lot of Russian dwarfs were noisy buggers! Keep an eye on her if it's unusual for her though

Well, she seems her normal self and isn't making the noises now. She's less than a year old - I wonder if she just discovered her voice and was trying it out.

My Syrian loves a squeak. We leave him well alone when he sleeps but now he's getting old (over 2.5yrs) he gets annoyed and screams at me when I disturb him to clean him out.

Probably not very helpful but the only time I've heard a hamster make noises is when they make that horrible squawking noise when they're very scared. I've never come across any that made noise otherwise but apparently some do. Interesting.
