We have chinchillas. You need to be careful with fresh food as they don't do well with stuff high in sugar. So even stuff like fruit isn't good for them.

We feed ours hay and chinchilla pellets. Then they can have one dry banana type flake a day......special animal banana flakes.

You need to be careful with small animal treats from the likes of pets at home. Unless it specifically says chinchilla on the packet I don't give them. They can't have everything that rabbits, etc can have.

Mine like lava shelves to nibble and willow sticks as well.

Can I ask about them being nocturnal? Is it worth getting a chinchilla/s when dc are 6 and 3. Thanks!

They're not nocturnal, they're crepuscular. So they do tend to be awake in the evenings.

However they're quite delicate, you'd need to watch closely with young kids. They don't mind been handled on their terms but that normally doesn't include cuddles.

They need out of cage exercise most days. They can live for over 20 years.
