GP with pneumonia- any hope?

One of our GPs who was absolutely fine yesterday suddenly became unwell today. Took her to vets who diagnosed pneumonia. She has fluid on her chest, her nose is all bunged up and she has her mouth fully open trying to breathe. The vet gave her a painkilling injection and an antibiotic injection and wants to see her tomorrow evening. If she makes it to the vets she will be put down if no better.
Has anyone had any experience of this? Any recovery stories I can cling on to? She is four and was popcorning about yesterday. Have cleaned out her hitched and settled her but don't hold out much hope.

Aw respiratory problems with pigs are serious.
Has she been caught in a rain shower? Maybe her bedding got wet?

Crossing fingers and three sets of guinea-pig paws but I guess you need to prepare yourself.

Hopefully the vets treatment will turn her round. Keep her bedding dry and dust free (though the hay is pants at the moment for the third year )

Our GP1 went from well-but-a-bit-middleaged to dead overnight. He was nearly 4. It was his time .

Hope she has a restful night,

one of mine recovered. he got worse, also diarrhoea, but then picked up as the abs started to work. i had to force feed him (gently!!) critical care in the meantime

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately she died overnight before we went back to the vets. The other two kept nudging her in the hutch, probably trying to say wake up! Will miss her as she was such a character, the hutch and run look empty now with just two in. Very hard saying goodbye,got more upset than I thought I would, just shows how attached we get to them.

sorry to hear that, goaliemum. they are lovely little personalities. we lost one a few weeks ago and i miss his little wheeks.

Oh very . They can go from popcorn to pushing-up-daisies in a very short period of time.

From what you described with her breathing being laboured and the fluid, I think the end was inevitable. (GPs don't do well with any respiratory problems)

She was in her own house with her own cagemates when she died. That would be the most peaceful way for her to go. ( Either in their own bed or in their owners arms is the way I aim for)

Off to The Rainbow Bridge now piggie, there are many that have gone before you waiting to show you the best grazing fields.

How do other guinea pigs cope if there's 2 of them and one dies?

My piggy lost his boyfriend at christmas. He had pneumonia and the vet was unable to save him. I think they are very good at hiding illness until its too late, so do tend to be fine one day and gone the next.

I'm really reluctant to get another. We started with one boar, realised he needed a companion, so got a friend for him. They fell out and gave to just be neighbours. Got pig no. 3 who lived with pig no.1, until he died and then moved in with pig no.2. Piggy number 2 we lost at christmas. So now it's just Teddy in a ridiculously large enclosure DHs carpenter friend made. Part of me wants another but DH needs convincing.
