Need a secure cheap hamster cage, recommendations please?

DD is going to get her first hamster sometime soon and I've been looking at cages for ages but am completely confuddled! Read reviews of various ones and can't find a definite 'good' one that'll also be cheap enough - as dd's paying for it with her own savings. Is it ok to get one second hand (if it's plastic)?

The savic ones look fab but not sure which one would be best (would definitely have to be 2nd hand then though as dd will only have about £30 tops after hamster, supplies etc). Not sure what size would be best either, don't want hammy to be crowded but some are too gigantic for her room.

Pretty against getting a Rotastak one though, I had one for a hamster when I was younger and it kept getting out (until I eventually found a fixed EVERY weak point) and takes ages to clean properly.

Any good suggestions for around £30? (if there's a brilliant one a little over we could add to dd's funds).

I've got one of my hamsters in this cage. It is absolutely huge, probably too big for a bedroom, but he loves it in there and is very happy. He has a lot of room to play and we've put in extra toys for him too. He is a climber so loves the bars!

I'm not sure you will find an appropriate sized new one for that price... definitely check out ebay, just make sure its properly cleaned and disinfected before using

is it for a syrian? if so, , ost cages labelled as for hamsters are actually way too small (same goes for wheels)

we have this one advertised for rats, but meets minimum size requirements for a syrian if you search rspca on it

MrDarcy my hamster cage is slightly bigger than your rat cage, but a lot cheaper, so the OP could get something new for not a lot more than £30.

I do agree, though, that most hamster cages are too small. I think a lot of them should be banned from sale, especially the ones in places like Pets At Home that look like circus tents etc. IMO you should buy the biggest cage you have room for and you can afford.

glad you found one a decent size yoo , thi k mine was on offer so a little cheaper when I brought it... I wabted mostly wood inside so was quite specific about type... then bought the wooden hook on bridges etc to keep her busy

Use a bin cage that you adapt through diy. Much cheaper than £30 and much bigger!

ferplast "laura" cage best money can buy and super spacious if you cant afford that maybe you shouldn't be getting a hamster they require just as much work as a baby
