Millie has hurt the same eye, the same way again

Millie went to bed last night fine. But when I saw her this morning her left eye was slightly closed, runny and milky looking.

Not nearly as bad as last time but I didn't want to take any chances as of course these things will happen on a Friday.

A little while later I did wonder if I had been a neurotic guinea mum as the eye looked better once she was out in the run. I asked teen DD opinion but she spotted the dodgey eye so I kept the apt. Just as well I did. The vet put the liquid in that shows up cornea scratches under florescent light and that proved there was some injury.

Millie has the eye ointment again to be used 3 times a day and needs to go back for a check up.

Having to re-think the girls bedding because this will just keep happening if I don't. I'm watching the new bedding thread with interest

What are they sleeping in at the moment fortified?

The hay is still dry and thorn-ridden again this year (I suppose it's last years crop) but the place I buy their bulk bags from (The Range) has changed their brand, so I'm hopeful this will be better.

Maybe try hay cookies? I use these indoors to stop their hay going everywhere and it keeps them busy.

Was the injury an old scar that showed up or a new one?

New injury, the green glo was small dots along lower lid. Last time she had one massive hole

Current bedding is layer of newspaper followed by woodshavings, topped with hay.

Vet recommended leaving out woodshavings whilst her eye is healing. He also said that some woods are more irritant than others and you can't tell what wood is going to be in a bag.

Trouble with Millie is she is a great shuffler. She digs in hay and completely covers herself and I think that is when she gets things in her beautiful huge eyes. The vet called them bulbous how very dare he

Goggles perhaps so she can dive in hay.

Shocked at vet comments! The only bulbous part of a pig is it's rear end. Tell Millie to get a nip in next time she sees him.

Oh Lordy the Belgium vet. He is marvellous but a character. He explained Coco walks like John Wayne last time and done an impression to illustrate.

Change of bedding did not go down too well last night. I put shredded newspaper only in the bedroom. In the living room a layer of newspaper and hay. The girls ran through the shreddings squealing for hours

This morning I found Naughty Girl and Millie snuggled together asleep in the living room and Coco in the bedroom. Hearing me they woke up, Millie gave me a greeting asked got any food. Then she snowploughed through the hay and got absolutely covered. I told her " That Millie is why you have a sore eye."

I might just have to put money aside and accept this is a problem she will have regularly

Last week we put the pigs out in the run for a late graze. GP3, our young Rex had some hay stuck to his 'nads, so I caught him and thought it was caught in a crevice, sticking out 10mm.

I pulled.......it was in his bum. It was at least 20mm in his bottom

He couldn't have eaten a 3cm piece of hay whole and have it go through in one undamaged piece.
So it must've got in there.

I can see how easy it is for their eyes to get damaged.
