New rescue guineas - with pics!

DH has rescued 2 piggies from work where they were being neglected. They arrived about 2 hours ago. Technically we are fostering them before they are re-homed.

They are both very grubby, greasy and overweight. One (the ginger one) seems fine, the other (the brown-ish one) is struggling to walk and has bumble foot (I think). They are having a vet check tomorrow, here's hoping the outlook is good for both of them.

Aw lovely piggies, what was the history with them being at your DHs work ? (Obviously don't give anything identifying away)
They are nice chubby pigs (are the boys or girls) and deserve a nice few grazing days.

If they are manky, you'll need to brave washing them but I expect your vet will want to mite treat them too.

He works in care, they were being kept there to teach the patients how to look after living creatures. Not very successfully, obviously.

Yes I definitely need to bath them, just want to let them settle in.

They are girls, we already have 2 boys so need to be careful!!

I'm pretty sure they're both girls, they have been kept together for at least 12 months with no pitter-patter of even tinier feet.

They're just really rather over-fed. Apparently fed ALL the scraps including a lot of fruit and even things like cake

70 it turns out that the suspicious porkiness was in fact an incredibly bad case of constipation. One warm bath and some gentle massaging later and she's about half the size

Both guineas are gorgeous, and well done on rescuing them, they are lucky little lasses to have found you - hope the trip to the vet was helpful, - it sounds like they have landed on their paws, it will give your boars a new lease of life trying to get to them. Would be interested to know what happened about the foot? Did the vet have a look at both guineas? Hope they are very happy with you. :)

They are both lovely pigs .

guineapiglet yes the vet looked at both of them. They both had masses in their abdomens which she thought was due to chronic constipation and that seems to be correct. Both also have very weak muscle tone from insufficient exercise. The brown one is in a much worse state and has sever bumblefoot but also seems to have issues with her back legs which may or may not be linked. There were no obvious injuries to her back legs. She is on oral antibiotics and hibiscrub.

Poor little girl - hope she perks up soon and can fully enjoy her new surroundings and being spoilt (with appropriate food).

Just a quick update...

The ginger one (Myrtle) has enlarged kidneys but is now in fine shape otherwise and just needs occasional monitoring.

...bumblefoot is starting to improve. She is on twice daily baytril and nurofen and has to have her puss squeezed - ew!

But finally I can see a the shape of a guinea pig foot emerging! Hopefully we caught it just in time.

Oh and they were both actually underweight, just constipated, but have now started to put on weight. I am very pleased

With the bunged up pooh, the pus-paws , the kidney trouble and being underweight to boot.

They are very fortunate to have been rescued by your DH (hopefully his work won't decide to get any more animals )

Just a thought...with the other being Myrtle is there a Harry Potter thing going on?

Ours are Luna (Lovegood) and Bella (-trix Lestrange) - had we got boys they would have been Harryb& Ron! .

Yes indeed, their names are Harry Potter inspired!
