Sitting up with sick bunny :(

I have a lovely grey lop house bunny, we rescued him 2 years ago, and he's fabulous.

He was at the vet on Tuesday for an injection for ear mites and the vet complimented him for being such a fabulous big healthy bunny.

He's not been himself since, quiet and not playing with the cat as usual.

I realised yesterday he'd not been eating, so I tried to tempt him with his favourites - broccoli, bread crusts and even a tiny bit of chocolate (he loves chocolate, especially Jaffa Cakes!).

His litter tray shows he's been peeing but there are very few pellets.

I woke up at 5am because I could hear something - he'd come into the room and was breathing really noisily, raspy. He doesn't want to drink. He doesn't want to be on my knee, but is sitting beside me.

I don't know what to do other than phone the vet at 8.30 when they open.

He's my bunny and I love him dearly - he's called Speedy MacReadie (he came with the name!) and he's been my companion in the house since I became disabled. But I think we're going to lose him, he's not a well bunny at all :(

Definitely take him to the vet as soon as it opens - it's really dangerous when rabbits stop eating. My rabbit has had this a few times (gut stasis) but he has always picked up after treatment. Hopefully your one will too. I don't think all vets are as willing to do a lot for rabbits as others. I'm in Glasgow too (I assume you are!) so feel free to PM me of your vet won't try treatment and I'll give you the name of someone who does.

Well he's now clattering about under the sofa and his breathing is better. Still going to the vet when it opens.

Thanks nothruroad - our vet is Sheddens in Clarkston and they're great, but I'll be in touch if I need more advice.

Poor Speedy died in my dd1s arms at 10am, just before we were about to leave for the vet.

We're all very upset - I can't believe he'll never come hopping to meet me at the door again - he was very much part of the family :(

He was really dd1s bunny and she's distraught.

I'm so sorry to hear this. Poor Speedy. Try to take comfort in the fact that he had a great two years with you. Love to you all, especially your dd1.

Your DD must be devastated but (IMO) it's always better for an animal to die in it's owners arms or it's own bed if at all possible.

Weegie - I'm writing this with tears in my eyes. Cannot believe Speedy has gone to the bridge - I enjoyed reading your posts about him as he sounds like such a lovely bunny. Poor little man - it leaves such a hole in your life. I still get tearful over my previous bun who followed me everywhere and was a constant companion for 4 years. It's good that it was quite quick for him at the end and he didn't suffer.

I'm sorry. Problem with rabbits as they are prey animals they try and hide that they are ill so often it is too late.
Lost one of my rabbits last week to a fox so giving the remaining one lots of TLC.

That's awful. Free ranging house SFA always seem to be the ones with most personality. Poor Speedy. Feel very sorry for you and your DD

Oh Weegie I am so so sorry, big hugs to you and your dd. I lost my bunny a coulple of weeks ago and it is heart breaking. Speedie sounds like he was an awesome little chap and much loved during his time with you, I'm sure soon you'll be able to smile at all the great memories he gave you.

Sorry to whinge.

I'm in the house alone today, and I've thought I heard him coming so many times.

It's stupid to be so sentimental about a wee fluffy, but the house seems lonely without him and even the cat is subdued, they were very good friends.

I've cried about 4 times! Got to start thinking of the good times. Like him "reclaiming" every flower in the garden with his chin after the window cleaners had been!

Not stupid at all :( he was your bunny, and a real character. Cry as much as you want.

It's not silly at all to grieve for a lovely pet you've shared your life with. They're such great characters and become such firm friends that no one with a heart would think it strange to be sad about the loss. So let it all out

Having a little cry with you Weegie Grief is like that for a special pet/furry friend. Reminds me of how I was with my lovely Todd aka Old Boy.

The only person he came to meet at the door was me.

He didn't like sitting on knees but loved a tight shoulder cuddle or just to sit companionably with you on the sofa.

He would have given anything to be allowed to sleep in dd1's bed, but as it is a loft bed it wasn't hygienic (though I think she smuggled him in on occasion!).

His favourite food was Jaffa Cakes, and he once climbed over my head in the middle of the night to get at my minstrels from Mother's Day that were up there.

He was our Schpeedums, the speediest speedy that ever speeded. We will miss him! And we so should get a photo option on Pets!

I have cheered myself up by reading the old Guinea Pig Obituary thread - we have six girls in a mahoosive run (usually outside but snow forecast so it's taking up most of our landing, we have to sidle!)

Oh Weegie I know how you feel. It's hard to get used to the quiet. My previous bun used to 'reclaim' everything with her chin. After I'd cleaned she go round marking basically saying 'that's mine' - I don't think anything in the house belonged to me. She was my constant companion an it was so difficult when she died.

It will take time but it will get better and soon you'll be able to remember Speedy with smiles not tears.

I'm so sad for you. So hard on the heart to lose a beloved furry friend. I'm sending you big hugs..xx
