I think Ds1's ratty is dying :-(

He's sat at the bottom of the cage barely moving. If you hold him he just sits in my hand and he's suddenly gone really thin.
Is there anything I can do? Feel like he's slowly dying and hate to think he's suffering. Sad
He's just over 2 years old.

Sad

OK- I've had NO rat experience (but there are loads who have on here)

Is he an only rat or has he got companions?
Would he be more comfy in a box lined with a soft towel and let him slip away?
If he has cagemates and they get on well then the other rat/rats will know he's unwell and hopefully give him peace but stay nearby (then they know that their cagemate is gone)

My rodenty experience with guinea-pigs is when they get to the floppy stage then you are looking at life expectancy of hours. Don't know if this applies to rats.
I never had any of my guineas PTS because they didn't suffer. They just went but wanted to be cuddled or given a cosy space depending on their temprement.(Apart from Evil Edna who died in the middle of the night in the middle of the dining room floor. Just for effect)

See how he is overnight. If he's quiet and not in distress then monitor him. Obviously if he changes then you might need to think of the Vet.

Sad though.

He does have a cage mate. He tried to drink earlier and tried to eat a animal choccy drop but couldn't keep his balance to eat it Sad.
I get the feeling he may pass over night.
Poor Freckle.

How is freckle this morning?

Tortoise · 01/06/2013 18:53

Sorry been out all day. He's still breathing but just led in one spot on the bottom of the cage. Ive put something soft in for him to lie on.

I'm sat holding him. He's barely breathing or moving. I feel bad just leaving him but get the feeling by the time I get an appointment at the vets he will have passed away.

Thought I would update in case anyone is interested.
Freckle was put to sleep at 5pm. I couldn't leave him suffering any longer. Sad

oh poor freckle :( its good that you had the vet help him go though it sounds like he was struggling a bit :(

PipkinsPal · 03/06/2013 18:10

Oh poor Freckle, I'm sorry for your loss. That's the problem with small furries they don't live very long. I've had a few rats over the years, Lavender was PTS, Lilac died on my lap one St David's Day. Pipkin, he was a fab rat, was PTS aged 3 1/2. Tiptoe was found dead one morning with his face in the foodbowl and Marmite died on my lap when I was watching the first episode of the tv series about the Titanic last year Sad

Very Sad I've never had rats but they look like such characters.

It's a huge decision to mke to have an animal PTS but you have to make that call.

How's RatMate and your DS?

Tortoise · 03/06/2013 18:53

Thanks for replies.
I haven't checked cage mate, Casper.
Will make sure DS gives him some attention later.
DS1 16 is suspected Aspergers and isn't really showing any emotion over it but he did dig a hole in the garden to bury him in.
