Guinea pig vet fees??

Hi, just wondered if these fees sound reasonable for a Guinea pig check up/consultation? I have just been quoted £32 per guinea pig for a standard consultation? Does this sound a bit expensive? They haven't been for about 14 months and I moved vets about a year ago. Last vet used to check them over when he cut their nails and would only charge £8 :o He would check their eyes,feet,mouths,bottoms and ears. I'm a bit annoyed that they want to charge me £32 to do this but not sure if I'm being a bit stingy Thanks

Sounds a bit steep. We pay £16 ish. Why did you move vets?

I took my boars to the Rodentologist and they charged £10- the boys had a check-up, dose with Panacur.
The Vet was in the other room, I've just looked at the Website and they charge £18 for consultations (but I don't know if that's cats/dogs or guineas)
The have a specific GP clinic too.
(It's a bit of a journey but I know my boars will be treated like the lovely animals they are, not just scraps of squeaky annoying fur)

So £32/pig does sound high.

Hi, I started to hear alot of rumours about them being quite poor in their care etc. Used to belong to the 'Pets at home' vets? We then got a dog a year ago and went with 'vets 4 pets' instead as they were highly recomended and alot closer to where I live. Kicking myself a bit now as to why we moved as they always seemed ok really. One of them does need a proper consultation as he has some kind of growth develop on his bottom which I'm concerned about,but the other one would just be a basic check up. I do their nails so the vet doesn't even need to do that!!

There's no reason why you can't take the dog to one vets and the GPigs to another

It's a while since I took mine just for a consultation so I'm not sure what they charge, but Smoothpig recently had a consultation, an hours stay at the vets for an x-ray under anaesthetic and was given some medicine. All together this cost £50 and the follow up consultation was free. So £32 does seem a bit steep to me.

we always charged very much less for Gpigs and other small furries as I felt bad charging more BUT there is a perfectly legitimate school of thought which is that you are paying for the vets time (and associated premises costs for that time) and thus ten minutes is ten minutes whatever the pet. As they say "what part of your brain are you not using!"
Having said that would have thought that if charging £32, they could at least see both gpigs in same slot for that.
(and yes seems expensive to me ....)

My vets don't charge for checking my guinea pigs, just for treatment, they I think have been 3 times and we were only charged when they had mange, we weren't charged for nail clipping or when we took them when we realised one was pregnant, I think that maybe because they wanted the baby pigs

I was at the vets the other day and they have just increased charges £26 just for a consultation don't think it made any difference if you were taking a great dane or a mouse

My cat and my GPs had different vets, both excellent.
The vets I was recommended had a piggy check up clinic for £10 where they'd clip claws and do an all round healthcheck, run by a nurse.

Mine charge the same fee for a consultation on any animal - which is about £25.

I suppose it's the same length of time for an appointment whether it's a hamster or a great dane.
