Runny rabbity eyes

Quincy is crying. He has been ever since I decided to be economical and use the brand of hay he won't eat to bulk up his outside hutch bed. I know, I know, stupid woman. He's just so laid back and easy going about everything that I figured it wouldn't bother him. And it felt like a dreadful waste!

Anyway, I whipped it out as soon as I saw his eyes watering and aired the hutch for the afternoon. But his cheeks are still wet two days later. He doesn't spend much time in the hutch, mainly flip flops about the house and garden, so he was only shut in there with it for a night. I'm quite worried I've done him some serious damage!

Do I need to take him to the vet, do you reckon? Or wrestle him to bathe his eyes? Or maybe leave it for a couple of days to see if it gets better on its own, thereby leaving out the distress and injury (mine!) of playing catch the rabbit...

Any ideas?

It could be tooth pain, that can cause a lot of eye problems. As you've already waited a couple of days to see if it clears and it hasn't i would say a trip to the vets might be in order.

Lots of rabbits do suffer from respiratory problems - ever hay fever like symptons! I had one like this, but she had snuffles and white eye gloop which sorted itself out with a mixture of salt water baths and eye drops from the vets.

Rabbits are very good at covering up pain, and gloopy eyes can be a symptom of many common rabbit problems, You might be able to ask vets advice on the phone if you're worried about causing distress, they can tell you if they think its worth coming in or not.

It's clear, as far as I can see. And his eyes don't seem overly wet, just damp fur on his cheeks. Poos and wees, silly me!

Are his paws damp and matted? He might be rubbing his eyes with those, which is why the eyes don't seem too damp.

I'm really not sure, but as it's been two days with none of the offending hay I think it needs a vets opinion, healthy buns don't have runny eyes.

Can I just say, have you ever been to a forum called Rabbitsunited? It's full of very good advice and knowledgeable people, I always go there when I'm not sure about something.

Thanks Goat, I'll check that forum out. His paws aren't damp, no. And we spend quite a lot of time in each other's company. I work from home and he lounges by my feet a lot and I've not seen him going at his face at all. I'll try and run him to the vet tomorrow then!

Often related to a tooth problem. He might need a dental. Vets I reckon.
