Has anyone ever had a Singing Guinea-Pig?

I was Googling Guinea-Pig Noises (DD likes to play them to the GP boys to see them react. They are interested for a nano-second, then realise the other GP isn't real )

When I was a child we had mainly sows. 2 of them used to "sing". Both sows were the only 'mum' pigs.

First time we thought there was a bird trapped in the house (sow was pg at the time, we thought it might be her in distress) but she was fine.
Then later she sang beautifully. Months later the other sow sang.
Like a woo woo woo woo continuing for 8-10 minutes.

No idea why and never the boys or the 'single ladies'

Yes Shy Girl did it just the once in our kitchen. She was staying in afew nights last winter as it was too cold to be outside. She would have been about 8 months old and a single lady.

It was a lovely and strange bird like song. Unfortunately didn't record well on 'phone. No idea what set her off.

Oh oh oh, one of the pigs again don't know which one did this a few nights ago. Moneys on Big pig again .

I thought we had a bloody bird in the living room!

Didn't last for long though, I think i disturbed it when I tried to creep over to see them :(

Tell your dd to let them watch pigs on the computer.
Little pig likes one where some pigs are popcorning because someone is rustling a bag. He starts throwing himself around after a few seconds

I love the noises GPs make .They are so varied and when you listen to them going about their (very important) daily business ,it's fun to try and work out what they mean.

I know other Super Furry Animals make noises, but there can't be any that have such a vocabulary.
(I'm sure evolution has given them their voice to stop them being eaten make them more attractive pets.People who don't know GPs sometimes don't get them )

Ohhhh, how adorable. I now NEED to make my girls sing....

DD plays the Guinea-Pig Noises on YouTube.
Her favourite is "Carly and Clare" 2 female guineas who get into the GuineaMobile to rescue lettuce.

But GP1 knows they use the same "wheek wheek" for all the dialogue and it doesn't mean "oh look ,Evil Dr Trouble has got our lettuce.....To the Guinea Mobile "
It means "Oh darn, she's going to make us go in that blardy plastic car and film us again...and I don't even like lettuce"

GP2 liked the "Male guinea-pig rumblestrutting to a female" which is funny because he never rumbles (GP1 does).

Our girls used to sing to each other when they were outside, much more of a tune than a squeak, as you say 70, they have lots of lovely sounds for communicating. Very strangely one of our garden birds started making a sound like the guineas squeaking and it became known as the' guinea pig bird' - think it was a jackdaw as they are very good at imitating. I would call the girls and they would squeak back 'here's my breakfast/dinner/tea?' - minutes later the jackdaw would imitate them perfectly!

Just written on another thread that am getting guinea withdrawal symptoms reading all these lovely threads - after having 12 over last 8 years, we lost our last gorgeous girl in the spring and have just moved house ( renting) so am not allowed any pets...... if anyone is the in the Winchester area and needs a petsitter/cuddler/respite or holiday care, let me know, it would be a pleasure to look after them! :) MY children found me watching youtube clips ( in german - the ones in the hammocks!) yesterday, that's how desperate I am becoming....

Never heard mine sing, but then they are boys and not at all musical. Smooth GP does sometimes do enormous squeaks when he is particularly excited (e.g if I just opened the fridge) that are so bighe has to flap his ears at the same time. Otherwise he's fairly quiet.

Fluffy GP mutters away to himself all the time.

They are so cute when they wheek so loud their ears flap up. Such effort in their little faces

I've only had 2 singers and both were sows who'd had piglets (don't know if that is more common)

They actually woke us all up with the sound of it. Trapped bird not so nice but the birdsong singing was lovely..

(GP1 does a doodle oodle doo ,doodle oodle doo sound like a mobile phone .
Maybe that's technical progress in the Cavy World.

Maybe he's just requesting a mobile for Christmas so he can call you at any time to remind you to get cucumber.

He sends mystical psychic messages to DD (his human mum) for that.

Though he does perch his little paws on the edge of DDs laptop

Smooth pig is a laptop expert and 'clicks' the mouse to browse. Rabbit just sits on it so no-one can see the screen.

Little pig like the laptop too.

Maybe they should start small animal size computers?

I've heard that this form of singing is something that only sows do, and never having had my own sows, I've not witnessed it. Darn.

My two do "sing" when being cuddled, and because their voices are in different registers (DBoar1 is a rodent version of Barry White,) it comes out as a beautiful harmony.

However my first pig did have a very special sort of sound that he made, which was quite haunting, like a distant curlew. He seemed only to sing like this when I was in stressed or upset about something and yes, it was very comforting. He'd been very ill for a few weeks and was clearly nearing the end of his life, but the night before he died, he started making this wonderful sound. I so wish I had a recording of it.
