My guinea pig has to have an operation

Please think of Peggy on Wednesday as she goes under to have a lump removed from her tummy. Vet not sure if an abscess or a tumour, but either way it has to come off!

Hi Mintyy sending best wishes to you and your piggie. If you feel a bit worried and live near Cambridge you could get a second opinion from Vedra at Cambridge Cavy Trust or a rodentologist.

It's a huge worry. The vets do these operations regularly but it's your pigglie going -gulp- under the knife.

Tell her it's for the best/for her own good/she'll feel the benefit when she gets rid of the nasty lump.

Is your vet cavvy savvy?
Do they do alot of surgery on little rodenty type creatures?

We do care, just wasn't on line when you first posted . I had a boar that needed a lump removed. It was huge and he came through the op fine.

Have some soft fluff free towels ready for peggy to sleep on post-op.

Thanks all. She is happy as larry and we would have had no idea there was anything wrong except for feeling the lump when we picked her up. Vet did comment that she was a very FAT piggy though.

Is she a lazy pig?

My Big Pig is slowly turning into a porker, I swear I have just caught sight of a double chin!
He does not move without force. He just sits in his bed or on his cushion like he is King Pig of the world .

I think we may have a few issues in the future with porkiness!

She doesn't move very fast! Our other piggy scampers around the run when they go out in the garden while Peggy concentrates her energies on snarfing all the dandelions.

Somebody,somewhere must invent some kind of guinea-pig excecise system, like a treadmill.
They can't use a ball because their spines don't ben that way (aaawwww)

They are quite lazy mammels as a rule but I'm still when our GP1 popcorns. He can fairly shift himself, I worry that he's been bitten by a wasp or something.

See, when Big pig gets put to bed, he gets hyper for 5 mins in the cage and goes mad in the hay.

When he is put out for exercise he just wobbles round until he find a comfy spot with food within neck craning distance

The activity thing is interesting. DBoar1 used to be wild as anything - like a very small mountain goat, parkouring around his cage, over the sofa, just anywhere. Now though, he prefers to just sit and take things in, and sleep in his basket. He's coming up to 3, so "middle aged," but other than occasional bladder and tummy upsets, he's fit and fine, but a bit "round" in the middle. Before, I've had pigs that are and remain pretty sedate throughout their lives and others that are livewires from cradle to almost grave. He was such a teenage tearaway, but when he turned about 18 months, he sort of shifted down, and now is definitely the opposite of Charles Atlas.

DBoar2 on the other hand still races around the room, taking great interest in every cable, every dust puppy, every crumb of dropped toast, etc. He comes back to DBoar1, incredulous that he can't be arsed to join him on his escapades! :)

Thanks everyone. Got to ring the vet at 3pm. She was bright as a button this morning ... she is the beautifulest most loveliest black and brown piggy with a little grey mouth and very cute whiskers.

Any news?

She is well enough to come home today! Picking her up at 5pm, will speak to vet then about what it was and her prognosis etc. Am having a solero ice cream with the dc to celebrate!
