Hamster potty litter question

I bought a hamster potty and hamster potty litter from Amazon and my hamster seems to like using it, but the potty litter is quite expensive for how much you get, so I bought some cat litter from Tesco which seems similar and is much cheaper. Only thing is i then read that you shouldn't use clumping cat litter as hamsters eat their own poo and they would eat the litter and it could cause a blockage. My cat litter doesn't say it is clumping cat litter though. Does anyone know if it is safe? If not what do people use/do.

I used sand. Children's play sand is safe a nd you get a huge bag for a few pound.

Or woodshavings if you don't used them as a usual bedding.

I don't think i would risk cat litter with hammys . They can be quite sensitive little things :)

I used sand and/or shavings with mine, the tend to go in the same area so it won't matter if there's sawdust throughout.

I wouldn't recommend cat litter.

Hmm. Maybe I had better not use it then. I wonder what is different about the hamster litter from the cat litter. Or maybe hamster litter isn't a good idea either. I used to use wood shavings as bedding material, but recently switched to megazorb. I also give him a bowl of chinchilla sand a couple of times a week to have a sand bath. Maybe i could start putting the megazorb into his potty instead. Thanks for your replies.

Or maybe i could get a little bit of sawdust or shavings just for his potty.

What's megazorb? why not use hay or straw?

You do have to get non dusty stuff though.

Hamsters are particular to themselves though :o

Megazorb is like a papery type bedding marketing for horses. Lots of people use it for small animals due to its softness and absorbancy .

Hay and straw can be dangerous to hammys . Risks of getting irritation from the dust or the sharp parts stabbing them. I have heard of a few cases of puncture wounds from sharp parts of hay .

I've always gone for soft hay and checked for sharp bits.

Sorry, Forestry Stewardship Council or something like that, any paper product certified by the FSC is supposed to be from non rainforest, sustainble resources. It's trying to crack down on illegal logging.

There's usually a little FSC on the packaging.
