Guinea-Pigs 'Popcorning'

Nice day today, so an excuse to set up the new run. It's a rabbit run, very secure, 3 doors than can open. Very solid 'mesh/wire' about 1" gaps, long metal pegs to hold it down. Though it doesn't have a base (and rabbits dig, GPs are too lazy)

Our GP1 boar tends to 'rumblestrutt' to show off to GP2 (they are brothers)

Today he popcorned (either that or he was Tazered) jumping about, little back legs flung out, twisting his neck round like a bucking horse. Then settling down to eat grass.

I'm putting it down to Spring Fever and the fact they were out somewhere completely new and neutral. (They had a few afternoons outside when we got them last Autumn, but other bit of lawn)

Bless him.I've had an adult young boar years ago but this was the first time I've seen this.

GP2 was Confused. GP1 back to @normal' now Grin

I'm heartbroke

I just went to get my girls out to go into the garden pen and my week old baby was dead

She looked ok yesterday and was in the pen all afternoon feeding from mum and grazing. They had some greens for tea and all was well. Mummy was stood with her making a funny noise and she looked confused.

What could have been wrong? It's so so sad and I'm dreading picking the children up

Oh damppatch that is so sad!

Do you think she maybe ate something on the lawn?
An adult GP will (hopefully) avoid things like buttercups but maybe a baby wouldn't ?
Was she the one born last Monday? So just brand new, as you say a week old?

Poor mum GP she'll be missing her baby. Sad

Sometimes you can't ever find out though. Hope your other GPs are ok.

Yes it was trixie born last Monday Sad

The lawn is pretty lush and may have the startings if some weeds but nothing that I could see otherwise I would have pulled it out ( sow thistle is in it)

It was awful finding her and my dd was heartbroke
Mummy is ok but quiet. She was cuddling up with two older babies which made me even sadder

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 27/03/2012 03:12

Damppatch - I'm so sorry :(

I guess you'll have to go over the lawn carefully and see what is growing that could have maybe caused it? Otherwise I guess she might have had a problem from birth that wasn't obvious. It's very sad, whatever caused it.

I have my son has 2 sisters who are now about 5 months old

Thank you for your advice and dampatchnot so sorry about your baby GP

PostBellumBugsy · 27/03/2012 16:52

Oh so sorry dampatchnot.

We put ours out at the weekend, in the afternoons when the grass was dry & there was lots of popcorning! They are so cute when they do it & clearly loving the bigger outdoor pen.
