Has anyone bred rats?

We are thinking of possibly breeding rats in the future. Not to sell on or anything, just for us to look after.

Has anyone had any experience?

Would you consider rehoming some instead? There are a lot out there looking for good homes. Even babies if that's what you want. That's what I do :)

You need to be careful when breeding because of genetics, if you breed without knowing where both rats have come from then you will likely have health problems with them. I have an 'oops' litter that I adopted (well just the boys) and they have bad lungs.

If you do want to breed then look for a breeder in your area and get the rats from them and explain you would like to breed from them. Make sure it is a reputable breeder, the Fancy Rats forum may be able to help find you one in your area.
