My gambling and drinking parent

One of my parents is an alcoholic and a gambler. I've grown up with their chaos.

They go through spirals of bad phases and are currently in one now. They've spent all of their 'free' money for this month but weirdly manage to curb their behaviour so it never eats into their bills. They've never missed a payment that needs paying. No one outside of our immediate family is aware of the destruction they cause. At the weekend they were out until gone 3am, totally drunk. I had a panicked phone call from my other parent as they were worried about their whereabouts.

I accept that I am their grown child with my own life and family so I cannot control anything. I am not their counsellor. It still hurts me because I worry about both parents and it makes me sad that they live their life in this way.

Does anyone have any experience or advice with this situation?

Definitely contact Al Anon if you haven't already- they are the group that specifically supports family and friends of alcoholics

You didn't cause this
You can't control it
You can't cure it
