I am 56 days sober - first time ever - was an extremely heavy

drinker and I am an alcoholic. In the last few weeks my farts have become extremely smelly! Is this normal? Sorry if tmi!

Congratulations! That is amazing, you should be so proud of yourself.
Farts stench are, ime, diet related. Like if we have vegetable fajitas (lots of onions & peppers) or I eat garlic bread -these are things that affect my ‘aroma’. Badly!

Start keeping a food diary and logging when the stench is bad & see what it is that you are eating that makes things worse.
The heavy drinkers I have experience of don’t actually eat much. Maybe you are eating more/differently with not drinking so are noticing it more?
Far preferable to drinking though & smelly farts are not a big deal in the grand scheme of things. Well done for giving up alcohol, you are amazing.

Thx unravelling!
Starting a new chapter and a new approach! Find myself feeling for a change! And being a much better person! Baby steps!

Well done Lotty Smile I think if your gas is still bothering you in a couple of weeks and/or bowel motions change then it's worth seeing /speaking to a GP.

I'm inclined to agree with PP that it's diet related. Do you eat a lot of meat? Meat sits and tends to rot in the stomach which attracts bad bacteria and can give off an awful stench.

Alcohol really messes with your guts. The high yeast and sugar completely messes up the 'good bacteria' balance. Perhaps see a naturopath for a few sessions to get some pointers and info (and treatment) to get your guts back in balance. They, your guys, are going through a drastic change after many years, it's not surprising there's a lot of upheaval guts wise.

Also, have you been overdoing carbs/cakes/biscuits? It's common to seek comfort in food when coming off alcohol. Your guts may not be able to cope with the onslaught of gluten?

You're detoxing don't forget and that's a process, it takes time. Do see your GP too (if you aren't already) and also don't forget to drink lots of water for the foreseeable - to literally flush out your system. That makes such a difference.
