Addiction in the time of COVID

From cigs to skag, booze to benzos!

Anyone fancy a totally unjudgemental support thread for anyone with addiction issues be it their own or a loved one?

I’ll start: my partner is fond of weed, cigs and booze and it’s just coming to light for my family how much he’s drinking as we’re isolating so relying on other people buying it.

He ‘panic bought’ a lot of weed last month which is seeing him through but the morning use is creeping up which concerns me.

I have my own issues with codiene and I’m starting to run low on my prescription. I dont think they’ll give me another and I’m dreading ringing the surgery. I have them for legit bad backache but get through them a bit too easily.

I also have run out of my beloved Valium Sad.

If anyone just wants to stick the boot in please note this is posted in a support forum and you’d be better off having a go at someone in AIBU!

Hi Rainbow, great to see you raising this topic here. I was involved in an addiction thread on Mumsnet a couple of years ago which I found so supportive, and instrumental in me finding help and recovery. However I have noticed addiction threads aren't really getting as much traffic on Mumsnet these days. Please don't be disheartened. You raise an incredibly valid point about lockdown really fanning the flames of previously under the radar addiction issues. My advice would be to read or join the alcohol groups (as issues are similar). And/or attend many of the 12 step recovery programmes which are all now on zoom. The great thing is you can just listen in initially as you don't have to have your camera on.

Good luck x

whiteflat48 thanks for the useful info and well done on your recovery!

I’ll check out the alcohol support threads x

@RainbowBalloon how are you doing with the codeine? I'm addicted too and looking to quit.

Madein1995 · 12/05/2020 18:41

Hi guys, how are you all doing? I'm a dihydrocodeine addict. I'm currently on a script for suboxone but am buying dihydrocodeine off an online pharmacy whenever I'm able to. I've placed an order but it's been lost in the post so the pharmacy have agreed to resend it. I know I wont even enjoy using it really and I'll just feel guilty and stuff but it's the compulsion to use.

Are people doing it cold tiekey or tapering or substitute medication etc?xx

Taking codeine on top of your prescription will either put you into withdrawals or have no effects. It contains an opiate blocker.
