Managed to dress myself and DD but need some help with DS!

He has black shoes for school but a bit worn and tan leather party shoes. It is a church service then hotel after.

Any ideas?

shirt and trous
short sleeves fin ein this weather

shopalot · 03/07/2010 22:45

Last sat for a christening my boys wore a short sleeve shirt and navy linen shorts. They looked smart enough and I couldn't justify buying new smart outfit that wouldn't get worn. Also it was really hot.

Monsoon have some really cute things:

Are short sleeves ok then?

He has more of them for parties he has been too, last few weddings we have been to we hired a kilt so he has no real occasion wear and no real need to wear again!

That is cute is paula but it will be a struggle to get him into that waistcoat! Would that look ok by without it?

OP posts:
paulaplumpbottom · 03/07/2010 22:57

Oh yes will still be very cute without it

trumpton · 04/07/2010 07:27

WE have just bought this for the summer round of weddings etc. Looks fab with this hat if he will wear one

autodidact · 04/07/2010 07:46

Shirt and not-jeans.

BooKangaWonders · 04/07/2010 08:46

shirt and any sort of trousers ("not my school trousers mummy...")

I've always had good luck in charity shops for smart boys shirts. They wear them once to wedding, christening etc, and then grow out of them!

Franup · 04/07/2010 09:21

Unless you have a whole summer of these sort of social events, I wouldn't buy something he couldn't wear normally. But then I'm not the biggest fan of formal clothing for little boys, I just immediately think of Damian Hurley.

And I wouldn't rule out jeans!

TheNextMrsDepp · 04/07/2010 09:26

Just a reasonably smart pair of trousers (chino-type - I got mine 2nd hand off eBay, then sold them back again after he grew out of them; worked out at around 20p per wear!) and a shirt - short or long-sleeved. Don't go mad for waistcoats, jackets and the like, unless you are rolling in it. No-one is going to be examining a 6-year-old for smartness.

Rockbird · 04/07/2010 09:29

Anything other than jeans/tracksuit/t shirt/trainers combo. While I wouldn't expect starched collars and a suit I hate it when people turn up for these occasions in the same thing they'd wear to Tesco.

nickschick · 04/07/2010 09:34

I think smart beige shorts linen or maybe combat with a smart blue or green short sleeved shirt white socks and polished shoes.

CurtainTwitcher · 04/07/2010 09:36

For dd3s christening last week Ds[6] wore a white shirt and grey long shorts with sandals. Looked very smart but comfortable

diddl · 04/07/2010 09:58

I think short sleeved shirt & smart shorts/trousers would be fine.

I like the linen trousers in the link but not the shirt & waistcoat.

champagnesupernova · 04/07/2010 10:01

yes ebay good for shirts too.

CaptainKirksNipples · 04/07/2010 10:20

Thanks everyone, I will have a look at those links. I remember that Damian Hurley outfit and that is NOT the look I am going for lol!

I have a week so ebay is doable. Might go shopping today, there are loads of sales on so I should get something cheap.

Just quickly, do tan shoes go better with grey or black or navy?

I am not loaded, but everyone else is getting dressed up! Don't want him feeling like the scruffy one. he does have other shoes but they are trainers and wellies and flip flops so not suitable. And he is more of a jeans and combats kind of boy.

I would say tan shoes with navy tbh.

I would also say long shorts might look smarter than ordinary shorts & you might get more use after than a pair of long trousers.
