need a dress...have 1950s style cut in mind...

I need a dress for a couple of occasions this summer, and also just to wear and enjoy...

I'm 5ft 6, 10.5st, size 12ish with large rump and thighs and smallish norks, shapely calves. I was thinking that a scoop neck dress with semi fitted top and flared skirt might suit - it generally does...but where are they? I've seen a couple of mums at school wear such ike but they often look like they might be vintage - look pretty with a skinny belt and sandals

I want to look relatively understated but a little quirky, or with a little twist iykwim

but not too obvious in a 1950s fancy dress type of way

am I making any sense? can you think of anything?

(think hitchcock the birds or madmen - you know the sort of thing...)

btw this dress looked nice on me but I thought it a leeetle staid...

here and and here

I love that dress.
Maybe with a big (red/coloured) patent belt to give it some va va voom.

moragbellingham · 01/07/2010 17:03

And patent nude platforms?

LaDietrich · 01/07/2010 17:27

thanks guys - see trumpton those ones are just that bit fancy-dressish for me iykwim...those BIG graphics and halternecks - I am 41 and I think I might something a tad more subtle

moragB - the dress IS lovely - I tried it with these shoes and I did look a bit more tall elegant and willowy than I EVER would have believed possible

however I also felt a bit like somebody's mum...

[nevermind the fact that I am two peoples mum )

have NEVER worn a pair of shoes like that in my life...

maybe I just need to grow up gracefully here ...

(also, that red dress is not one I can imagine getting tonnes of wear out of... or those shoes...)

There are quite a few dresses that meet my same your criteria here I think and some are definitely quirky.

this is quite pretty but a little too short for me personally.

skirt not so swishy but good shape for you

love this and they do a blue version which should show to the right of it.

Actually that Oliver Bonas site has lots of lovely dresses. Am very tempted now....

LaDietrich · 04/07/2010 22:29

Don't laugh, but have a look at Laura Ashley

southoftheborder · 05/07/2010 02:40

I was going to recommend Oliver Bonas!

I tried one on (a "trollied dolly" one), on Saturday, and it was amazingly flattering.
