I like
this

Im thirty four, size fourteen, sometimes sixteen depending on how much of a pig ive been. Is this dress too young? I really like it...Im looking for an outfit for a friends party - dinner then to some sort of retro dancing club (arrrggghh, havent been to a "club" for years). Is this too much or should i go for smart jeans and a nice top???

If I DO wear this dress, what shoes would go? I am crap at heels, can do a small one or a small wedge....im on a small budget too.

And finally, can I wear some tights with it?? what colour??

Please help, I dont want to look old trying to look young!!

Hmm, I'd say no but only because I bet it looks really good on those tall skinny teenagers that seem to be everywhere at the moment! There are loads of sales on at the moment so you'll be able to find something cheap I'm sure. What kind of colouring do you have?

babysplotface · 24/06/2010 13:57

I think it's fine actually, because the flower pattern is over the tummy! You would wear it with nude tights and nude colour heels. Or, if your legs are good, just nicely shaved and moisturised legs and dressy sandals.

I don't think a retro club will be full of teenagers, more like 25s and up.

WellMeantHellBent · 24/06/2010 13:58

I like saying at the moment, sorry
I am 27 and wouldn't, it depends how tall you are I suppose, I'm only 5foot4 so I avoid big prints.

geraldinetheluckygoat · 24/06/2010 14:00

i am shortish 5'4" , you're probably right. I am v pale and freckly. redish brown hair. DD boobs, not bad legs, not bad arms, roundish tummy!

foureleven · 24/06/2010 14:02

I have same stats as you and is wear it... infact i might buy one!

geraldinetheluckygoat · 24/06/2010 14:05

No worries Wellmeant!! I DID ask! lol. I never know wether to go for tunicy thinks or not, i think i tend to think im bigger than i am sometimes. I did get a straightish tunic in debenhams when im dh got me a personal shopper (!!) who made me try it on and it does look nice, so the shape itself doenst look too bad...just wondering if Miss Selfridge is too young for me though....

Ohh nude shoes and tights...

i think i would need to try it on and see how fat i look

could this POSSIBLY be worn with leggings? or would that be ridiculous?

geraldinetheluckygoat · 24/06/2010 14:06

do it, foureleven!!!

No you're not too old at all.

It's not too short/trashy/of the moment trendy for someone in thier 30's, or even 40's.

It's very nice. looks dressy for a night out.

If you're going out in summer I'd aviod tights and go fake tan on legs and strappy sandals. i love my tights, but on a warm night the wearing of tights will age you!

geraldinetheluckygoat · 24/06/2010 14:45

lol ok. thanks Brideshead
I have some brown gladiator wedges...will these do?
and if i bend over, will everyone see my knickers? its not THAT short, is it?

OP posts:
BridesheadRegardless · 24/06/2010 14:51

Gladiator wedges sound good.

It doesnt look too short, but it is Misssselfridge so I'd check. Mid thigh is good.

You'd ne suprosed how little bending over is required on a night out. Usually. But be wary of getting out of taxis, cant be done with dignity it seems.

geraldinetheluckygoat · 24/06/2010 14:57

thanks for the advice! Im going to order!!!

foureleven · 24/06/2010 15:27

Yay!

AngryPixie · 24/06/2010 15:38

I think the neckline is a bit unforgiving for DD boobs.

WhatsWrongWithYou · 24/06/2010 17:40

I'd agree if it was more close-fitting, or if there was no distracting pattern - but it looks fine to me. Just make sure you wear a really well-fitting and supportive bra underneath, and I'd add Spanx but I'm in my forties!

And as far as I can tell from the pic, it's not a straight-up- and-down tunic, it's a fitted dress, so will be lovely!

janeite · 24/06/2010 17:42

I think the neckline is too high for big norks.

tethersend · 24/06/2010 18:14

I think it's gorgeous. I'm 32 with big boobs and if I had good legs I'd wear it.

I would wear it with black or claret opaques or nude legs, NOT leggings. Leggings have no class

Actually, i'd wear it with clogs, but I don't expect anyone to agree with me.

brimfull · 24/06/2010 18:19

tis nice dress
dd spottd it the other day
it is quite thin material so leggings waistband may show through
As long as it's not tight you'll be fine

janeite · 24/06/2010 18:41

Absolutely no to leggings.

I am 40 and have good legs and big boobs and I wouldn't wear it because I need a slightly more scooped neck. Also, it is polyester so would be v hot and sweat-inducing when dancing, I think.

janeite · 24/06/2010 18:41

Would be totally gorgeous in silk. Warehouse often do similar dresses but silk - maybe worth a peep?

geraldinetheluckygoat · 24/06/2010 20:24

ok, i havent ordered it yet as the website is playing me up. I think ill be ok with the neckline as the other tunicy think i have has a high neck and looks fine...i have a couple of very supportive bras for these occasions!
Im nervous of going with bare legs so might get tights to try too.

Im going to order and try it..im going to order the sixteen so it doesnt cling. had a look at warehouse but couldnt see anything I liked as much for a similar price......

theres some nice things on the newlook website in the boutique stuff. Everything is so SHORT at the moment....

WhatsWrongWithYou · 24/06/2010 23:23

Yes that's true but haven't you noticed the people wearing longer lengths look frumpy?

You're a spring chicken love - and consider what someone else said about tights being ageing also.

WhatsWrongWithYou · 24/06/2010 23:29

This is cute - and NL have got loads of layered ruffle dressed which are really flattering as they cling and show your figure but the ruffles disguise any unsightly lumps.

WhatsWrongWithYou · 24/06/2010 23:32

Sorry I didn't mean you should go out in a bikini .
This

Maryqueenofchocs · 25/06/2010 08:10

tbh at 34 why shouldn't you wear it, you're not on a pension! I'm 36 and would absolutely wear it, infact I would wear that at 50 (with a cardi) if my legs were good enough...

I have a large chest and sometimes tunics tend to smooth out my line rather than accentuate it, which sometimes I like. Sometimes I like them on show, sometimes not...

Try it on....

Bobbalina · 25/06/2010 08:19

Definitely not too young for you. Wearing tights will make you look frumpy though IMO
