I am going to start a new job in August which requires wearing suit/formal wear.It is a traditional working environment.I would like to buy dresses(preferably on sale) and team it up with jacket rather that a suit. This job is for 3-4 months and maybe it can be extended.I need your expert advice as I have not got anything apart from a black shift dress(which has not been worn yet)

a) I have two children to get ready
b)need wardrobe staple so I can build a workwardrobe in the next few year
c)comfortable as I have not worn suits/formal wear regularly.I have been promoted so I am very conscious of this fact and somepeople I will be woking with know me for the last 10 years( I dont want to overdo it if you see what I mean)
d)Do you rather wear suit
e)You may find it hard to believe I only have a black oversized cardigan.Did post few days ago regarding where to buy them

I am size8-10,9stonish, 5ft5inches, with the mums apron. Thanks by the way

Congrats on the job!

I too recently returned to work.

I find invaluable:

  • my black suit - skirt and jacket. I can change the blouses worn underneath, jewellery, scarves etc to give a different look.

*black trousers

*pin stripe dress

*grey dress.

Mums apron fixed with magic knickers.

Are you in UK?

Sorry notanidea. Only if you want to fly over to Australia for your shopping trip.

Not sure of the English equivalent of David Jones or Myer...

If you don't want to spend too much I'd start in an upmarket department store for the basics.

I returned to work after maternity leave recently and hardly anyone is in suits at the moment. Is it definitely suits at your place?

Where I work everyone seems to be in dresses of various descriptions; jersey ones, tailored ones, they all seem fine. I've got a pair of black, wide legged trousers which I wear with a beige linen blazer with a black trim. I have a few jersey dresses which I wear with cardigans or jacket, depending on what sort of meetings I have.
