Dress from ebay - help an old skinflint, wontcha, guv?

Habbibu · 17/06/2010 21:12

Ok - have wedding and mum's 70th to go to soon. Want a new dress but would like to be a cheapskate environmentally friendly, so have been looking on ebay. I need to be able to feed ds in it (but will put cardi over the top when necessary).

Can I have your thoughts on these, please?

simple; not sure about the blue

glam or grannyish?

looks dull in photo, but desc sounds nice

will this work with curves?

this is popular; puts me in mind of WWII

coast

can't decide if I love or hate this

Thanks - any other ideas welcome.

I like ww2 dress best I think
then I like the first one and brown ghost one

hobbs one is grannyish
others not good imo

piratecat · 17/06/2010 21:17

i like the ww2 one!!! its gorgeous.

piratecat · 17/06/2010 21:18

the ww2 one looks like there's gonna be a battle for it tho (geddit??)!

Aitch · 17/06/2010 21:20

oooooh, ladies, having met habs i can tell you that she has The Most Beautiful auburn hair and is really distinctly pretty. i vote ted b (the blue will be stunning) or ww2 or green coast. all lovely.

MerryMarigold · 17/06/2010 21:21

oooh, buying on ebay is brave! do you know what styles suit you?

  1. It's a very low neckline! Should be able to whip boobs out to feed, but not sure it will suffer a nursing brad gladly!!
I like it though. 2.Mmmmmm...yeah, could be either. Are you the kind of person who can make it glam??
  1. Definitely simple...I think a bit too simple tbh. Will cling tummy for sure. Are you quite flat?
4.Another clingy number. But I like it. 5.Nice, but another potential bra problem...
  1. Like that. Good for wedding and party
  2. Hate it. But I don't like lilac. The bluey pics make it look better, but some of the pics make it look very lilac.

Overall fav would be the coast one or the ted baker one. But I still think it's risky if it doesn't look good!

Habbibu · 17/06/2010 21:40

Why thank you, Aitch!

I am getting flatter (thank you, ds feedmonster plus weightwatchers online!).

Yes, WWII may bugger my cheapskate plans the way it's going. And v good points about bra, Merry - may hunt down a Hotmilk number that might be more dress-friendly.

I've worn shapes like these quite a lot, and that's how I created my shortlist. Have just seen that Coast and WWII finish at the same time. bugger. If the Ted Baker is still £10 close to finish, I may grab it anyway, as a back-up plan.

Thanks, all. If you see anything else, let me know, please?

i think the tb one will be stunning on you tbh habs. but like i say, coast and ww2 also beauts. AND I GOT MY SHOES!

Habbibu · 17/06/2010 21:52

Oh hurray! I do like them. Now you need a bag, don't you?

OP posts:
Aitch · 17/06/2010 21:55

lol

biggerfeetsmallerboobs · 17/06/2010 21:59

Habbibu, we have similar hair colour and I wear lots of greens cos I'm always told they suit me ....do you like either of these from Ebay?
Reiss - Gorgeous colour, but is neck line too low?
cgi.ebay.co.uk/REISS-Silk-Evening-Dress-SIZE-12-/330442054909?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Women_s_Clothing&hash= item4cefe19cfd
Jane Norman - I know strapless is totally impractical for BF but I loved this and cardi comes with it!

Habbibu · 17/06/2010 22:06

Reiss too spangly for me, bigger - don't have Aitch's chutzpah! JN one is v pretty, but think feeding does rule it out - ds has a haabit of yanking everything in sight as it is. It is very nice, though

OP posts:
Aitch · 17/06/2010 22:07

ooooooooooooooooooooooooh, you would look really, really, really STUNNING in that reiss dress. promise me you will consider it...

Habbibu · 17/06/2010 22:09

Wedding will bee ffull of historians - I think I'd feel somehow themed in all those coins.

OP posts:
Aitch · 17/06/2010 22:12

you're completely wrong, tbh. it's a summer wedding, you'll look stunning in that colour. all you'll see in reflection is the blue of the dress and the sky etc. plus if the kids are going to be there they'll be in your arms anyway.

Habbibu · 17/06/2010 22:14

Aitch, it's a summer wedding in Edinburgh. You're getting very optimistic - got South of France on the brain.

Are you heading over this way in the summer, btw?

biggerfeetsmallerboobs · 17/06/2010 22:14

I've just noticed the Reiss one has a hole in side seam which seller says would be easily fixed but just to warn you - I'm rubbish at sewing so might put me off! But it is a gorgeous colour for a redhead....

Aitch · 17/06/2010 22:17

lol, you should buy that dress, habs. it will make you look even more beautiful...

we were over in st andrews a couple of weeks ago, just a fleeting visit though. will be over again to see greg's mither, so will catch up with you lot next time if poss?

stanausauruswrecks · 17/06/2010 22:23

I would go with either 1 or 4.
I have owned the brown version of 1 and it's a lovely dress, nice swishy skirt, and I don't recall it being too low cut(or maybe that's whuy I got all the compliments .

Tillyscoutsmum · 17/06/2010 22:24

green 1940's style

easy enough bf access ?

crap pic but looks nice

I like the first one and the WWII one of yours

Tillyscoutsmum · 17/06/2010 22:25

love this but not the cheapest and length may not work ?

Habbibu · 17/06/2010 22:33

Is this the same, do you think? Scares me a bit less in these photos.

We are away 1st-17th july, aitch, but yy otherwise.

OP posts:
Aitch · 17/06/2010 22:47

great! probably august tbh, before dd1 STARTS SCHOOL. i think it might be the same dress, although i kinda think it isn't for some reason. i like the turquoise better in the first one, but maybe it's just the photography?

Habbibu · 17/06/2010 22:54

Good lord... dd starts pre-school nursery then too. She's come round to the idea, after insisting that she and ds would stay at playgroup "on our owns, with Alison (playleader)". ds is crawling now. And kamikaze.

OP posts:
MerryMarigold · 18/06/2010 13:32

Sounds like you could wear this and look fantastic (add a nice belt!). Advantage of being very cheap, but poss a little sweaty.

I still favour the coast one or ted baker.
