Help with dress for a friend with big boobs...

Lotkinsgonecurly · 15/06/2010 21:43

A friend is looking for a dress for a wedding (as a guest). She has large boobs, but is a size 12 and about 5 ft 5. We've been to lots of places looking for dresses but she has to go up to a size 14 for it to fit around the boobs and then hangs off her everywhere else. Does anyone have any ideas.

She's looked at Coast, Ted Baker, LK Bennett to name but a few.

Ideally after knee length / just above the knee dress.

Hav you looked at bravissimo?

Lotkinsgonecurly · 15/06/2010 21:50

She has, ordered one from there but apparently it looked like a tablecloth. Nothing else seemed to be suitable for her.

she should find herself a good seamstress, get the dress to fit the boobs and get the seamstress to alter to fit the rest of her body.

It really doesnt cost that much and it will fit her perfetly.

DrivenToDistraction · 15/06/2010 21:52

She should just get a dress she actually likes in the size that fits around the bust and than have it taken in.

I tend to resort to an outfit that is a top with trousers or skirts. Rarely find a dress to fit. If I do find one they tend to be wrap around style.

Lotkinsgonecurly · 15/06/2010 21:57

Hmm, she's currently having one taken in by a local seamstress. I suggested she ask you guys but was too scared .

I've suggested top and skirt / trousers but has her mind on a dress. May get her to look at the bravissimo catalogue again as there seems to be different things in there from a few weeks ago to me.

I had a similar problem (still b'fing so am 16 on top and 12 on bottom). Wrap style or stretchy fabric worked the best. this looked ok

this one good as well with a vest top underneath to minimise comedy clevage

BakuMum · 16/06/2010 11:28

has she tried East? I am a 12-14 bottom and have to wear a 16-18 top for my ridiculous boobs. I like East's stretchy wrap around, as they go well, esp with cami underneath to minimise, as T'scoutmum says, 'comedy cleavage'. I actually bought a straight linen black dress from East which fits on top and doesn't look too huge.
Having stuff taken in is all very well but it doesn't always work across the shoulders - you need a very good tailor for that! I sometimes think it would be easier to just be totally lardy - at least then I'd be in proportion.
The only other solution is to gte something sized midway between boob and hips, and cover the top part with a bolero jacket -usually it just looks bad under the arms and the sides of the boobs. Phase Eight have some lovely dresses and bolero cardies in stock that I can't wait to try on when I get back to blighty from Baku.

Hope your friend finds something, Lotkins, and that she feels great in it.

KristinaM · 16/06/2010 12:01

she needs to try a jersey dress with ruching or draping around the bust, but in a tailored style. phase eight has lots

avoid prom dress styles with a fixed bodice in satin or styles that flare out from below the bust

i am also 5'5'' and a 10 but usually have to buy a 12 for my 32Fs

KristinaM · 16/06/2010 12:03

a few years ago i got a lovely dress from bravissimo but a think the quality is much poorer now. i've had to retun all the clothes i ordered from them thsi summer

beanlet · 16/06/2010 12:49

I second jersey or other stretchy fabric; Isabella Oliver do really nice wrap dresses, for example. I often find that L K Bennett dresses work too.

beanlet · 16/06/2010 12:50

(though I missed that you'd already looked at L K Bennett!)

Tillyscoutsmum · 16/06/2010 13:21

Phase eight have some nice stretchy jersey ones

Love the phase eight ones tilly.

She's just ordered something from bravissimo so hopefully, something should come from that.

Thank you

Bravissimo clothes are badly made and dull. I've kept several of their clothes and always ended up regretting it.

(Their bra fitting is fab though)

This dress (in peacock) is a fab fit for her shape. Not sure if it is dressy enough though. A 12 would be plenty big enough French Connection

And this one is amazingly flattering (unless she has a baby belly). more french connection

And they are both on the sale

muddleduck · 18/06/2010 19:40

and while I'm posting links of fab clothes on sale for the big of bust...

Paul Costelloe ivory top Much 'drapier' than in the picture.

tethersend · 18/06/2010 19:54

Something like this or this or this would be lovely...

muddleduck · 18/06/2010 19:58

that layla dress is gorgeous.

wish I had a wedding to go...

KristinaM · 19/06/2010 09:25
