longchamps - pliage

So, I have a pliage.
I thought I was being cunning, and thinking laterally. No, it wasn't a designer bag, but it was functional, and waterproof, and very useful.

When I go on holiday, I like to just take hand-luggage, and I can fold the Pliage up until I'm through passport control, and then decant.

And it can hold my laptop. And so on, and so on. I like it. I was happy. I felt we had forged a unique bond, based on mutual respect.

But I've realised ... everyone has this bag. I've suddenly become aware that, wherever I am, I can look around me and I will see at least one other woman carrying one.

And today I saw a schoolgirl, in uniform, with one.

They are completely ubiquitous.

The converse of bags.

A pashmina.

Did everyone (except me) already know this?

have no clue what you are on about if that pleases you

HeywoodJablome · 11/06/2010 20:51

I didn't.

I don't know what it is.

Can you link for the fashionably challenged?

thatsnotmymonkey · 11/06/2010 20:51

I have 2. They are everywhere in Japan too, and yes school girls use them as school satchels.

animula · 11/06/2010 22:41

Hello again. Sorry, put dd to bed and fell asleep!

The look like this - though they come in a range of colours, sizes, and two handle lengths.

Well, that's two "what?" and two "probably". So possibly not completely conclusive as a sociological observation.

Am fascinated to hear that about Japan, though, thatsnotmymonkey.

I have one and only use it when "shopping" but it is very overpriced at £50-ish. I could live without it.

Lilymaid · 11/06/2010 22:49

I've got one and I'm old and not remotely stylish. I agree they are very overpriced - near £60 now for something you would expect to pay £15 for if they weren't a particular make - after all they are basically shopping bags.
The colours are good ... tries to justify expenditure ...

pointydog · 11/06/2010 22:55

A pliage? And it looks like an old granny's shopping bag?

Well I never.

purplepeony · 11/06/2010 22:59

The only justifcation for the price is that the handles and flap are real leather.

Mine is brown and I wish I had got it in a fun colour- like purple.

It just feels so boring. Maybe I will ebay it-they get snapped up like hot cakes and I have only used it about 6 times.

animula · 11/06/2010 23:04

I think lots of women buy it for the same reasons I did.

That it's v. sensible. And because it's v. plain, and nylon, it goes with most things without having to think v. hard.

Converse. It's the converse plimsolls of bags.

But I still feel a great deal of affection for mine. It is a nice, reliable bag ... .
