Why are all girls' T shirts fitted?

Boys' ones are not. So why do all girls' t shirts have to have lycra in them and be close fitting? I've had to resort to buying white T shorts and dying/customising them for DD1 and DD2, who are 9 and 11 and don't like tight fitting tops.

I also had a look at jeans in H & M - all the girls' jeans are tight fitting, all the boys' jeans came in a variety of fits, including baggy, and all had elasticated/adjustable waist, whereas the girls' ones didn't.

Why is it so impossible to buy ordinary, square cut loose fitting tees for girls?

Could you not just buy the boys ones?

I have the reverse problem - ds1 whose nearly 6 is very slim and looks better in very slim fitting jeans and t-shirts.

Am guessing you've tried gap/zara/boden etc.

Drives me up the wall too. I end up buying boys ones - which is fine by DD as she prefers boys clothes.

Seriously ONE DAY I am going to open a totally unisex kids clothing outlet. No pink/blue sections, everything cut to a CHILD's body shape, no logos, branding, sexual overtones, negative stereotyping, fab range of colours. I live in this shop in my head!

Because females don't exist unless a male is looking at them. The concept of a sexually unavailable female is alien to our society ... we have to make them look fertile or they are Unacceptable. They must be forced into having a defined waist, prominent buttocks, longer legs and a cleavage in order to make males understand that they exist, hence the fitted Ts, tight jeans with a bootcut, and v necks on clothes for little girls.

Oh God - that makes my blood run cold.

Because they look better.

The worst of what I said is ... it's actually true. I'm not fabricating. Why else would we make children wear clothes that are not fit for purpose? My sons don't wear fitted muscle shirts to make their pecs look bigger - because they aren't made for little boys. They don't wear stacked cowboy heels to make them appear taller - because they aren't made for little boys. they don't wear tight, croth accentuating jeans - because they aren't made for little boys.

But the same cannot be said of clothing for 7 year old girls. They can get high heels, child branded lipstick, waist-fitted t shirts, bra shaped 'crop top' vests, boot cut jeans (the whole purpose of which are to make us look taller and slimmer) ... why else would they need women's clothing if not to assuage the confusion of men who don't understand that you don't have to be a boy to be a child, you don't have to be a male to be a person, and you don't have to have testicles to have an agenda for your own life other than 'Ornament'.

Colditz, you are sadly right. I have bought boys' Tees, but most of them seem to be in shades of sludge or burgundy and have planes or things on them.

Have got DD1 some surfer tees from TK Maxx which do the job though.

...Polarn y pyret, Joules, Petit Bateau all do decent clothes in a range of colours that look like proper children's clothes.

But they are very expensive.

So I'm currrently cutting out to make a pair of shorts and a dress for DD which she can slop about it.

I really struggled to get DD some comfy trousers when she started crawling - would have bought boys ones if they hadn't been such miserable colours!

Petit Bateau and Joules are made for little, stick thin children though. I had to get DD1, who is 11, 5'3" and size 8-10 in adult clothing, a size 16 Joules polo shirt, to get one that was a) fairly loose and b) long enough. No way is she a size 16!

DD2 is slim but very tall - she is 9, but takes age 12 in trousers. PB et al cling on her as well.

...ah, you see my DD IS a total stick, which is why I either go to Petit Bateau or make stuff for her. Everything else drops off her as her waist is tiny while her legs keep growing.

I'm a blobby type so I don't know how she got so skinny.

DH brought her back some clothes from the USA and she had to have XXS and it was still too big!
