Can you bleach clothes back to white/cream?

For example, I have a green crochet dress which I would love were it not for its hideous colour... can I bleach it or otherwise make it white/cream? Or is it a lost cause?

Has anyone done this? Are there rules? What are they?

I think it would go a rancid shade of yellow tbh.

far easier to dye it a darker colour. Would the dress look nice in black or dark blue, for instance?
