Driving with the top down: help me find a hat!

TheBoyWithaSORNedMX5 · 28/05/2010 18:01

I've come to the conclusion that what I need is a legionnaire's hat, perhaps even with a chin strap. But this would look

Boden have a big sun hat but a. it's spotty, so it will look odd if I'm wearing somethin else patterned and I think that's a bit too ditzy even for me (or is it?) and b. It might blow away.

Can anyone suggest a stylish alternative? Please?

Headscarf a la Grace Kelly?

indigobarbie · 28/05/2010 18:04

I'd say just get a funky skip hat, as even with sunglasses on the sun still hits your forehead and can be pretty hot!

ChunkyPickle · 28/05/2010 18:09

It's not helpful, but the look on my boyfriend's face when he looked over and saw me sat next to him wearing this:

Was worth every penny..

ClaireDeLoon · 28/05/2010 18:14

Every hat I have tried to wear in my convertible has ended up blowing off unless it is a hideous baseball cap type. You're better off with a scarf. Or driving at OAP pace.

squeaver · 28/05/2010 18:16

All hats blow off. Wear a scarf.

bobbiewickham · 28/05/2010 18:20

What's a skip hat?

Coderooo · 28/05/2010 18:21

only nobs drive convertibles
SO NO DIcE

bobbiewickham · 28/05/2010 18:22

Not even fluffy ones?

TheBoyWithaSORNedMX5 · 28/05/2010 18:23

Is there a knack to headscarf wearing, so I don't end up looking like a washer woman?

Indigo - what's a skip hat?

Claire - helloooo! I'm the US president's Ford Transit/ water loving mammal in a Czech car. Hope you're well.

chunky. I might be tempted...

I am a nob

I have a nice convertible.
I don't wear a hat or scarf . I have sexy tousled hair.

ClaireDeLoon · 28/05/2010 18:30

Hello transit like old friend, how're things with you? I'm not so good today tbh, same crap as we both experienced before, confirmed earlier this afternoon. Have had a couple of glasses of wine already and trying not to dwell.

I have scarves that are long strips rather than squares, the key bit is to cover your hairline I think.

Not all people who drive convertibles are nobs, I have a 1965 Triumph TR4a in pale wedgewood blue, it's a thing of immense beauty, italian design, british manufacturing when they could do it well.

ClaireDeLoon · 28/05/2010 18:34

My car looks like this it's gorgeous.

TheBoyWithaSORNedMX5 · 28/05/2010 18:53

OMG Claire - it is gorgeous!

I've just bought a black MX5. Not as lovely as your Triumph of course but good lord it's lovely to drive.

I really am so sorry to hear your news. Possibly not the most practical help, but I have Pimms here. You'd be more than welcome to some. I forgot to put cucmuber in my first one so I'm having to make another...

pag I am a nob. I have tousled hair. And burnt ears.

@ bobbie

(sorry, I was a little slow on the uptake there)

Thanks, I had a couple of glasses of water to try to sober up then gave up on that idea, back on the wine!

My sil has a mazda mx5 I've heard they're very sporty with good handling, they're also very pretty which is important. Hopefully you get nice weather to enjoy it this weekend!

indigobarbie · 28/05/2010 21:28

my black mx5 is the best car I have ever bought, amazing handling and awesome power. I should have said 'baseball cap' like thing, I've never had my hats blow off on me and I don't drive conservatively either....But if I go without my sexy tousled hair ends up obscuring my view of the road and sticks to my lipgloss

trumpton · 29/05/2010 06:24

this is my convertible The trouble is putting the roof on and off takes all summer then it rains. It's great fun tho. you might have to follow 2 links to get to picture.

oxcat1 · 30/05/2010 12:05

Grace Kelly look fine, but I'm always a little freaked out by the story of what happened to Isadora Duncan. I'd embrace the baseball cap nob-look in preference to decapitation. ...

TheBoyWithaSORNedMX5 · 30/05/2010 18:29

Gosh yes, oxcat.

trumpton oh yes, lipgloss. I imagine it's compulsory when driving and mx5

trumpton I do like your Landy - it must be great fun!

headscraf is your way forward. my tips, although i hav enever mastered a proper tie (nor the nobbishness of which some of you speak) is to:

fold into a triangle

pop over head, encompassing more forehead than you may thing flattering

knot ends over / under / around ponytail / bun / knot of hair

but the key is to do it looser than you think you should

but i have a pin head

TheBoyWithaSORNedMX5 · 01/06/2010 10:25

Thanks, racemeraceme. Good advice, I think. I am cack-handed so I need all the help I can get; back in my waitressing days, colleagues used to tie my apron for me because they found it too painful to watch when I did it myself... I can do a tie though, so there's hope.

I'll get into town and pick up a stylish headscarf. I imagine Monsoon/Accessorise would be the place to go.

"oh yes, lipgloss. I imagine it's compulsory when driving an mx5" - that was for Indigo, not trumpton. Sorry!
