Well,if you are like me and have hair which is about 85% grey, you will find that highlights are created naturally because the colour 'takes' differently on what is left of my normal dark brown hair, than it does on the grey. I currently use Schwarzkopf Live XXL in Mystic violet. I make sure to use a colour protect shampoo and conditioner and find it really does stay fairly true to the freshly coloured hair, until I re-do it. ( About 6 weekly)

My hairdresser bleached a slice of my hair - she pinned the top layer up, then bleached it underneath, but in the middle iyswim? So the top & bottom layers were my natural colour. I used Directions to dye the bleached bit bright red. The rest of my hair was dark brown, and it was fab because I had no visible roots.

I still have a couple of inches of bleached hair (had it done originally last year) but I'm lazy and have just reverted to dying it with Shwarzkopf XXL, so my hair is a deep red, but a bit brighter where the bleached bit is.

Go for it I'm thinking of going purple myself, before I start college in Sept (am 30)
