I really want one. I traipsed round the shops for hours yesterday and no joy because they are all very 'wafty'. I think to carry it off as a short arse, it needs to be a bit fitted. But where to find such a dress. I'd be very grateful to anyone who would post me a link....

5' 4" here, and loving my maxis...

I don't own this one because the neckine didn't suit me, but this Full Circle was very flattering from the boobs down.

I do own this tie-die from Dorothy Perkins (although will offer a note of caution that somebody on another thread had it too and it shrank in the wash...) and a striped one from DP that I can't find to link to. Also tried on this which was lovely but 12 a bit too low and they didn't have a 10.

If you're after something dressier, this Phase Eight was lovely on, but would have needed a bit of shortening on me. Lord knows how tall the model they're showing it on is...

HTH - and good luck! It took a while for me to find the right ones, but now I have I love them. Key thing for me was avoid ruffles and keep shape v simple.

trumpton · 20/05/2010 17:38

I made this one the version with the cross over bodice to contain my boobs. Just to show you the shape as I am not a fan of wafty ,they look like a nightie on me. I made this in an Amy Butler fabric in turquoise and sludge green similar to this. Been looking in shops for a maxi but might have to make again as they all seem ditsy and wafty and ruffly...make me look like an aging hippy.

I'm 5'1 and have just bought this for an informal evening wedding reception. I'm having to take it up at the straps as I'm a size 6 and the dress is an 8, when it's hoiked up and I wear with wedges its an ok length. The body is fitted and flared out gently where it should

colditz · 20/05/2010 17:59

Do NOT do it if you are short AND porky.

BlameItOnTheBogey · 20/05/2010 18:22

Brilliant thanks everyone! Will take a look now. (Not at all porky colditz - size 8 - but do have a little mummy tummy...)

I'm short but not porky and today bought this and this.

Both lovely and the latter is very narrow despite being tiered so flattering.

Will have to get both taken up though as am only 5ft.

Whoamireally · 20/05/2010 18:31

I am short (5ft 4) AND porky and just bought this one from Planet and it skims in all the right places and is a perfect length.

Don't give up hope!

trumpton · 20/05/2010 19:13

I love the Planet dress.

Clure · 20/05/2010 19:42

traceybath I love the black DP dress

traceybath · 20/05/2010 20:08

It is very nice clure and only £10 with special offer.

BlameItOnTheBogey · 21/05/2010 09:53

Loads of lovely one here. But (I'm being fussy now) I'd really rather find one that wasn't jersey material. I find it clings a bit to my tummy and two children in the last two years has left me with a small mummy tummy that I'd rather hide..... Thanks for all the suggestions though!

Any more out there?

I'm 5'4 (or just under) and have this which I had taken up by a couple of inches.
It's great.

Whoamireally · 21/05/2010 23:21

Woman in Planet shop says patterned things are good for hiding mumtum. Also, you could wear a very fetching control pant under a maxi dress....

MrsSeanBean · 22/05/2010 09:49

I bought this from Warehouse, lovely drapey flattering shape but I it skims the floor with flats, so I may yet need the sewing machine... It is available in black, beige, and a leopard print.

I have to say that Warehouse is not somewhere I'd ever even entered before, but I was impressed, both with goods and service. Great price too! (IMO)

BlameItOnTheBogey · 22/05/2010 10:57

These all look great but there seems to be no avoiding jersey. I really want a cotton one (cooler and more forgiving). Maybe I am after the impossible....
