Just had mascara badly applied at the dior counter....dior show brown waterproof on one eye and the new black one containing serum to condition my eye lashes on the other.....my eye lashes are clumped together on both eyes, she smudged it but cleaned it up but that removed my undereye concealer....and more importantly one is black the other brown.....just about to go and wash it all off.....why do they do that to customers? she didn't get a sale.

Samples, samples, samples!

Personally I've never let one of the make-up counter ladies near my face and always ask for samples so I can try the products at home away from public scrutiny.

Did she use the Dior Show mascara? Someone on here recently said it was brilliant so don't discount it due to her poor application.

If there's a product you're interested in then go to the counter and say that you've seen the adverts for it and it looks fab but having shelled out lots of money for similar products before and they're now sitting in a drawer you don't want to buy without trying it first and do they have a sample. They usually do and if the Lancome/Clarins counter in John Lewis doesn't then the one in House of Fraser often does.

I think the problem stems from the lighting in the stores. You tend to apply more when being seen under electric light so you look fine instore and bonkers in daylight!

And I've had sample mascaras from Chanel and Estee Lauder in the last year.

If you want a recommendation for a new mascara for day time use then Clinique Long Pretty Lashes is great. It really does lengthen but doesn't thicken so your lashes look fluttery rather than heavy.

I use the Diorshow and it is v.good - gives good volume. It does have a massive brush so does take some getting used to, and it is a 'dryer' formula. I think mascara also depends on the brush and for hygiene most counters will use those spindly crap disposable applicators so you are never going to get a good idea if it does what you want.

I cannot get on with those rubber brushes around at the moment, but prefer a proper bristle brush as they don't splodge on too much (but then I have naturally black lashes so don't need to coat them so thoroughly)
