What jacket/cover up do you wear with a one shoulder dress? and other wedding outfit questions...

Hi, I am going to a wedding on Saturday. I have two dresses. DH says the Coast one is not so good on me (it is a bit long on me) so I have a reserve of a one shouldered dress from Warehouse which is nice but is it appropriate/too clingy? But the question is in the church what do I wear as a cover up a one shouldered dress? I have a decent cream jacket but it does look a bit odd.

It is a really posh wedding.
I will also be taking one wriggly baby.

I am unsure about foot ware, hair and am feeling a bit wobbly as this is a University reunion and no one else has had babies and is mainly fashionable and able to shop without anyone else crying or being sick on them. I have black heels and decent black fascinator that went with the Coast dress.

I am (gasp) 35, 5ft 4, about 9 stone with a post baby tummy. My legs are ok (but v pale). I have today to go shop if i have too as it was only last night that DH said about the other dress not looking so good. AAAAARRRRRRRRGH

Would love advice from you stylish ones.

sod your Dh & his comments, go with the Coast one, you have the other bits to match.

Personally think the other one is a bit too tight/short/i would feel uncomfy in it.

HalfMumHalfBiscuit · 20/05/2010 10:20

true I did feel fine in the coast one. The belt is a bit funny though. they suggested I buy a proper belt in the shop.
It ties at the front and rides up and down as it is only thin material and not fixed to the frock.

Well the weathers going to be scorching on saturday which is the good news.

I like the warehouse one and would just put a pashmina type shawl on top in church and remove pretty much straight away afterwards.

Black shoes would be fine although nude or metallic would be better.

I personally wouldn't bother with a fascinator but would wear a nice metal cuff and a clutch bag.

Would take the coast dress back as sounds as though it doesn't fit properly and isn't flattering.

Or do you want to start again from scratch and get a new dress?

traceybath · 20/05/2010 10:37

This is pretty

And would work well with black shoes and wriggly baby wouldn't pull it down. Also tummy skimming.

HalfMumHalfBiscuit · 20/05/2010 10:42

Thanks tracybath. I'll have a look about for a pashmina, good idea.
I thought nude shoes would be best with the warehouse dress too.

I am miles away from the Coast store so won't be able to shop there or take the dress back.

What colour pashmina?

I have a rusty orange one but that would clash.

What colour shoes / handbag would you wear with the dress? Probably some sort of neutral colour would be best for the pashmina.

Also, what sort of shape is the cream jacket? If it's suit shaped it might work if you roll the sleeves up, and with a big bracelet. But if it's more of a high-necked lady-like number it might not work so well with the dress (because it's a bit short).

As for hair, I'm a bit of a shorty, so I always like a bit of an up-do or messy ballerina style bun. Easy to do, and nothing for the wriggly baby to grab at.

Any chance of getting the Coast one taken up though if you feel more comfortable with it? And what about some spanx style pants if you feel self conscious about the tum? Not something I would have dreamt of pre-baby, but...

gtamom · 20/05/2010 11:11

The Coast one is great. I'd get a new belt and wear that one. If it is too long, get the hem taken up. It is way nicer for a wedding. The pink one is very cute, but a party/bar dress.

HalfMumHalfBiscuit · 20/05/2010 11:24

matsikula - have got suck in pants .

gtamom - that was my thought, more party than wedding.

I agree with Traceybath bring the coast dress back, if is riding up etc you won't be comfy even if you get the hem taken up

I would definitely go for pashmina and metallic shoes and chunky bracelet your uni friends will be that you have 2 dc and look so well!!!

PlumBumMum · 20/05/2010 11:38

Like that cuff that is on Traceybaths pashmina link

PlumBumMum · 20/05/2010 11:41

maybe not your thing but New look is great for cheapy one offs, they always have good copies of the in trends

HalfMumHalfBiscuit · 20/05/2010 11:51

sorry missed that link tracybath. nice pash. will look out for similar

Plum - was thinking of cage heels but new look is a likely source

I prefer the warehouse one.
My initial thought was wear it with a leather bomber jacket but that's a bit rock chick.

HalfMumHalfBiscuit · 20/05/2010 20:57

Right, have got stuff for both outfits today just in case DD is sick on one will have back up!

So bought a nice creamy beige wrap from accessorise in case I wear one shouldered number. Have already got nude shoes and metallic shoes so will try some on tonight.

Got lovely cuff for 3 quid in warehouse

Also bought a black belt for coast dress.

Tried on new shoes but didn't see any I liked and was in panic buying mode by then.

Tried to get Coast dress taken up but all dressmakers busy.

As I said am going to have a little try on in a mo and see what works.. PANIC!!!!

OK- going to piss on your chips. Off the shoulder screams WAG; no age groups excepted.

The print is lovely.

HalfMumHalfBiscuit · 21/05/2010 14:02

I am in no way glam enough to be a wag sadly.

Tried on both dresses last night with shoes etc and DH likes them both equally. I will take them both and speak to a friend at the hotel and see what she thinks.

Just thought I'd let you know that I took both outfits to the wedding just in case.

I wore the Coast outfit initially and it worked really well for the church and meal. When the first part of the day was over, after the speeches, I took dd for a bfeed and had to take the Coast dress off to bfeed (in my room ) so thought I might as well wear the Warehouse dress too. So I had a quick shower and got changed and had a great time at the evening do in a different outfit. I did use the wrap too as it was a bit chilly outside in the evening.

Thank you all for your advice.
