Harem pants - why?

Somebody explain this fashion fad to me. I keep seeing otherwise attractive women looking totally ridiculous and like a tent from the waist down. When did MC Hammer become a fashion icon? Is it so's you can carry your whole week's shopping in the pocket? Has it finally become fashionable to look like you have the world's biggest arse?

Its all about the cut. I dont like the ones with MAJOR droop. I have some slimmer fitting ones. More cropped jogger (ha) than harem

They look fucking awful, without exception. Even the skinniest of skinny girls look like they have a HUGE arse.

If Chezza Cole can't pull them off, nobody can. Fact.

There is no justification. They are hideous in every way on every person, no matter how thin or attractive.

I was in an aerobics class and there was a woman there in the full MC Hammers. She bent down to tie her laces and rose up like a cloud of crows. It was terrifying.

I think they can look lovely - as with most things depends how you wear them.

But I like lots of stuff that many on mn deem to be awful

Cheryl Cole isn't my idea of a style icon either but she has a tiny perfect little body and is very pretty and she still looks shit in harem pants.

Just horrible. But I think jeggings are fucking awful too and everyone seems to own a pair.

I love my harem pants!! They have a stretchy waistband which holds in my fat mummy tummy and they actually balance out my huge curvy bottom..... have to agree with Tidet about jeggings though.... only person i know who pulls them off is my 18 yr old size 8 sister...

I was pondering that very question in Topshop yesterday.

I think they look ok from the front but elephant-arse like from the back!

French women (well, okay, just those living in Evian/Thonon ) seem to wear them very stylishly - both the long and knee length versions. Mostly worn with vest tops & flip flops.

I would like to try but fear I would look like understudy for Genie in Aladdin.
