How to clean suede shoes?

I have got some suede shoes but they were really cheap. They are comfortable and look nice but have stains on them from drinks and rain and stuff.

How can I clean them without ruining them? Also dont want to have to buy expensive products to clean them if possible...

my mum used to hold shoes over a steaming kettle (mind your fingers!) then lightly brush with a suede brush you can get from shoe shops

Really, ok thank you will give it a try, I am useless with suede shoes, I do not know why I bought 2 pairs...

If you manage to clean them, then get some protector spray.
It will protect against rain and stains. I love suede but I definitely need to douse (sp?) it well in protector spray before I wear them.

About cleaning them I have only used suede cleaner and it is just under £4 a bottle, so not a cheap option, even though it does last really well.
