I'm getting married in 4 months time, and have decided to make my own dress, partly because I am ambitious (possibly mad), partly because I am hugely fussy.

So here's some background,

  • I am a Goth (no white),
  • have a love of vintage clothing (specifically 40's/50's),
  • the wedding is a small non-religious one and is being held at a zoo
  • I am a short arse at 4'10"
  • and overweight, which at my height is a size 14-16

Only recent picture I can find showing my current figure - it may change, but being disabled ATM - I wont hold my breath on that.

I've found a few patterns I like, but not sure which would suit me best. I do own a waist training corset, so can reduce my waist by about 4-6 inches.

Would really love your help narrowing this down.

With the ones with multiple lengths, I'm not sure which I'd go for.

Thankyou for reading through all this.

PS. If you can think of something more flattering for my figure, please do suggest it!

2,3 and 7 I reckon if you want full length.

Then again, My bf (very similar colouring to you, size 14/16 and 5ft 5) had a gorgeous dress made for her convalidation, it was a rust/burgundy tafetta 50's Doris Day style dress, knee length with an organza stole which stood up like that shawl collar. She wore her hair the way I thought straight away would suit you - piled up in a loose chignon. She looked gorgeous.

Whatever you choose, i hope you have a lovely day.

2 or 3

MrsWajs · 17/05/2010 15:39

I think 2 or 7

songbird Bride of Frankenstein is all good by me! (Technically she wore white though) I'd dress like Morticia Addams if I had the figure for it.

I may use black lace on the dress, but definitely not black all over, goth as I am, black seems inappropriate.

I would like the dress to be wearable again, but bearing in mind I'm usually overdressed anyway, that doesn't narrow it down much.

For my hair, I'm thinking something along these lines, one, two, or [[http://s3.amazonaws.com/readers/2009/06/02/victoryroll_1.jpg three]

I like 1, and I think it would really suit your shape and stature

The choice of fabric could weddingify it easily, with wrap and flowers and killer shoes.....

I think long dresses on short people look a bit weird tbh

maamalady · 17/05/2010 21:09

I think 2 or 7 are the nicest Definitely not 6, as others have said - the shape doesn't look flattering even on the model, so who knows what it would like on a real person!

No 3 hair is booooooootiful.

BridesheadRegardless · 18/05/2010 09:11

I LOVE number 3.

Hermya321 · 18/05/2010 21:31

Image three with the top part of image one, so sleeves, neckline and waist clincher.

You have a similar shape to my friend, you have such a lovely figure.

Image three just for the length, but I don't like the full length arms on it. The arms on image one plus the neckline will draw attention to your boobs and then draw the eye down to your waist which will be clinched in by the belty type thing. Then it'll sort of flare out over your hips.

If you want it to be wearable again you can alter the length.

I hope the above makes sence, I am very much in the throes of preghead at the moment.

As for hair, do one and you can wear something fabulous around your neck.

You could do red with a black sash around the waist.

You have to do pillar box red lipstick though with the dramatic black eyeliner, that would so suit the style you're going for. Very forties/fifties, gosh I could have a ball with that one. No.7 are doing different era make up at the moment and they have a forties look. Might be worth a look at.

For some reason, I kept thinking of pokka dots. I saw an old picture of a war time wedding aaaaaagggggggeeeeeeesssssss ago where the bride was in a similar dress to image one and it was red and white pokka dots.

If you want to use black lace, maybe try a crosage or making a fabric broach to go on your coller or neckline. Maybe a black flower on black lace.

Sorry I may have gone a bit OTT here .

I love number 1 and I think it would really suit your shape. I'm envisaging it with long sleeves in some sort of silver and black combination, maybe a silver underdress with some sort of black lacy overdress? And I could only see 2 out of your 3 hair styles, but I really liked number 2. You will look fabulous, and you must post a pic of the finished dress whichever you go for!

Actually, I want a silver and black dress now, have talked myself into wanting one!

littlemissnice · 19/05/2010 13:28

I think number 1 or 7 .
