I can't help but feel it should be a long, proper ball gown type thing. But I'm not sure. What would you wear?

Long yes but doesn't need to be full if that's not your style. There are lots of maxi dresses around at the moment so you might be able to find a dress that is long but not too ballgowny...

I'd probably wear a long dress but, not a ball gown full on thing. Or i'd wear a cocktail dress ..

long and slinky

Long, definitely...

I went to one recently and there were all kinds of dresses worn - not all full length although there were quite a few! I would wear a dress that makes you feel fabulous & suits you. I wore a dress with a tight bodice, fullish skirt finishing below the knee. (In black as I am not at my ideal weight!) If I was a slinky-malinky type gal I may have gone for the slinky dress .

You can wear either long or cocktail..whichever you feel most comfortable in...

I'd go long and slinky...

John Lewis had a whole section of long & slinky as I was whizzing through there earlier
