Please help me find dresses for a wedding and christening

I'm a size 14-16 with a large (F cup) bust and chunky (no nicer way to put it) thighs. I can't wear anything that has a hemline above the knee. Have got a bit of remaining baby belly but is on the decline, thank god, am hoping the last will be off before the summer hols. Need to find dresses for

  1. Christening in July, Church is very traditional so needs to be reasonably modest
  2. Posh wedding in September with super fashionable bride, DH is usher and I am not posh or super fashionable so feeling a bit under pressure and have no clue where to start.

Have tried usual high street places and everything I can find is either ridiculously floral or short or maxi length. Anyone got any ideas?

something like this for the christening - i have a large bust too and sometimes put a lacey vest thing under anything too booby

debenhams dress

for the september wedding i would reccomend something in a block colour but nice expensive fabric that will make you feel like a million dollars which you can then accesorise with some very stylish fashionable trinkets/headpiece etc ! let me know what you think ?

Hi,

I highly recommend seeing a department store's Personal Shopper, which is normally free!

I did this for my wedding 'going away' outfit and I'd not long had my baby. I'm also a size 14-16 normally. I explained what I was looking for and she brought all sorts I wouldn't have tried on, when looking for myself!

If you go to a department store, they tend to have normal fashion concessions and some of the better end stuff like Coast, that I tend to like.

Thank you both for your replies.

I hadn't thought of putting a vest under a dress, don't know why as do it with tops quite a lot. I really like that Debenhams dress, think I'm going to order it as free shipping and try it.

I think I might try a personal shopper in somewhere like Debenhams for the Christening, although would be really nervous. When I get a child free day I'll make myself book it.

Where should I start looking for something for the wedding? I like the idea of block colour.

Hi Lenni, not sure if you are a boden girl but I think this is lovely. They do (or did) another similar one which was less 'strappy' around the top but it may be in their autumn/winter range. I also like Kaliko stuff (am similarly busty). You can find it in most dept stores like house of fraser. Good luck

oooh, this is nice as well

I'm in a similar postion to you (although my norks aren't quite so abundant!). I have a wedding followed by a christening (I am to be Godmother) and also I found out yesterday that I will be going for lunch at Le Manoir fairly soon afterwards.

I am breastfeeding my 5 week old DD2 and plan to still be doing so at the wedding & christening. So, I have been searching for a wrap dress that will take me through all occasions.

This I love, although it may be a little too floral for you.

This Ted Baker is gorgeous, but they seem to only stock size 12 & under. I could probably get away with a 14, but definitely not a size 12 at the moment.

I also like this, although it may be a bit too plain.

Good luck anyway, would be interested to see what you end up with - you may well inspire me!

I am a similar shape as you by the sound of it and I have just bought this dress for a wedding. Its very flattering (with the assistance neck to knee spanx ). It is a bit plainer than I was hoping for but I am planning to brighten it up with accessories

NewDKmum · 03/05/2010 16:37

How about this one from my favourite brand:

Love that Boden party dress, some of the reviews aren't all that great for it though. Tempted to order it next time I get the 15% coupon through and see what it looks like on.

Have looked at a lot of Karen Millan on eBay, I do love their dresses but this season is very fitted and that doesn't suit me, not until I've got some more baby weight off anyway.

Anyone know how Ted Baker sizes? Esp in the bust? Normally can get away with a 14 in dresses as long as bust isn't tiny and not empire line.

Thanks everyone, great to have new places to look.
