Can you glam up when you are in your 40s?

I notice most women cut their gorgeous hair when they are in their 40s but men find long full hair desirable and sexy. I am thinking of buying some clip-in hair extensions to make my hair look fuller and longer. Do you think I can get away with this if I am 45? Or do you think women go short for a reason when they hit their 40s?
Thanks

are you going out on the pull?

cyb · 02/05/2010 18:05

FWIW none of my 40 plus friends have short hair

BecauseImWorthIt · 02/05/2010 18:23

Why on earth shouldn't you? Nothing wrong with being 40 fgs!!!

Wear what you like/what suits you and to hell with your age.

purplepeony · 02/05/2010 18:37

As above.

It's not age that matters- it's how you look.
Think of Twiggy, Jerry Hall, and Joanna Lumley- all mid 50s- 60+ and with long hair.

It's about what type of hair you have, the colour,, texture and your face shape.

People age so differently- Gillian Duffy ( the bigot) -bless her- is 2 years older than Joanna Lumley. could you find 2 women who look so different yet are almost the same age?

I know what you mean about long hair after 40, I had a wobble about cutting mine when I reached the big 40. But I think, like others have said, there's nothing wrong with it (as long as it genuinely suits you) and if you feel comfortable and happy then go with it.

I think they run the risk of looking naff.

Better to have a well cut and coloured bob for example than a load of ratty extensions swinging about

pagwatch · 02/05/2010 20:01

three different questions

do women need to go short haired after 40?
Def NO

can women look glam after 40?
Er yes - of course

To look glam should i use clip in hair extensions?
I think there are a lot of ways to describe hair extensions but not sure that 'glam' is one of them. I would imagine it is much easier to get hair extensions wrong than to get a good look from a good cut

FritziGreenEyes · 02/05/2010 20:24

Yes, of course you can look glam, but I wouldn't wear extensions. Especially not clip-in ones. They don't look natural and I would be too nervous about unintentional "unclipping". For the same reason I would never wear chicken fillets .

I always feel more glam when I have my nails done, had a facial (can be DIY) and wear high heels and a cocktail ring.

If you want to grow your hair long, ask a hairdresser for a suitable "in-between" cut and keep your hair styled.

janeite · 02/05/2010 20:29

I wouldn't bother with extensions, whatever age.

I think have your hair long or short, as you like it, whatever your ag.

Having said that, I got my bra-strap length hair cut into a short shaggy bob last week and my form group (Yr 10) told me it made me look ten years younger!

purplepeony · 02/05/2010 20:59

I think it's all about what suits you janeite.
I went from longish straight bob 10 years ago, to quite a short chopped look - think Princess Di. Then I have gradually let it grow out -almost shoulder length but still layered cut with a fringe,(bit Selina Scott now) and everyone keeps telling me how nice it looks! I am over 50.

I think long and straight- Alice in Wonderland- does no one many favours after late 30s, but longer hair that is not below the shoulders, and styled in some way, looks good.

CristinaTheAstonishing · 02/05/2010 21:04

"men find long full hair desirable and sexy" - we aim to please

NorbertDentressangle · 02/05/2010 21:08

By all means have your hair cut/styled/coloured/grow it...whatever...but don't use clip-in hair extensions. They're a bit naff IMHO

(also imagine a mans shock if a clump of hair comes away in his hand in a moment of passion )

tethersend · 02/05/2010 21:13

No. They confiscate your lipgloss at your 40th birthday party

Get proper hair extensions if you want them.
