Please can someone explain swimming costume jargon to me?

So dd(8) needs a new costume. I can, it seems, choose from splashback, actionback, spliceback, slickback, raceback, clipback and so it goes on.

What she wants is one that doesn't leave her back too exposed but one that is quite sporty and plain looking, so think Speedo rather than Boden. What should I be looking for? Is there any technical reason why the vast majority seem to have a hole at the back - do they fit better that way?? Any help would be much appreciated!

It's such a load of crap isn't it?
Any old Speedo will do-just go through website until she finds one she likes.
I only ever by Speedo and have been a serrious swimmer since the age of about 8.

Thanks moondog. I skimmed Speedo earlier and thought they all seemed to be a bit gape-y (is that even a word?) at the back. But on second glance I have seen a retro-looking one in pink/orange that might do.

Blimey - £3.75 to post a flipping swimsuit though - will google to see if I can get the same one elsewhere!

Zoggs do one with a lot of back coverage, not sure how it compares price-wise with what you've looked at though. www.simplyswim.com/products/Zoggs/GirlsCottesloeVBack-Navy.aspx

Yes, but Bamboo, how much time and money would it cost to drive into town, park, drift around shops and so on?
I think internet shopping worth every penny.

bamboo · 02/05/2010 21:33

Thanks MumsInBeds - that would be ideal, alas she's a 28 so out of stock. At least I know they exist now!

Moondog, you're a woman after my own heart, I'm with you absolutely on that one - I have no intention of real-life shopping, hoped I might find it on one of the sites that offer free or cheaper shipping but can't get her size.

I'll just bite the bullet and buy the Speedo one. She likes it and does swim 3 times a week so will get her use out of it.

Thanks all.

If you have a John Lewis near you, can get this delivered to store for you to collect, park in collection bay to pick up, then no shipping charge to pay.

Thank you - I never thought to look there! That's just the job too. Have ordered the Speedo I mentioned earlier, however. It's a bit girlier than I thought she'd want but she liked it and has just gone up to level 6 so deserves a treat. Will bookmark that for next time though.
