short prom dress

16 year old daughter has prom coming up and has kindly given me the task of searching for a dress for her- she's far too busy being stuck in the peak district for Duke of Edinburgh practise weekend!
She's about 5'10 size 8/10 and wants something short and strapless with maybe a ruffled skirt. Seen one on asos but is constantly unavailable in her size. Also trawled tk maxx. Don't really want to spend any more than £100.
Any ideas ladies?

Monsoon and Coast would seem the obvious but you have to get lucky in the sale if your sticking to under £100.

venusonarockbun · 01/05/2010 23:26

DD looking for similar and like soph24 says theres nothing under £100. Dd is sick of looking.

Bargins are out there though - I got my wedding dress from monsoon in the sale for £60 - reduced from £260.

The coral one would be nice

Have you tried Lipsy?

here

Have you looked on www.unique-vintage.com ? They're in the USA but I've used them and found them reliable. You do have to pay duty on the goods when they come over though. They have TONS of really nice and reasonably-priced prom dresses.

Also if she's not too fussed by the strapless requirement, Vivien of Holloway do fab 50s repro dresses with frothy petticoats that are within your budget. The satin ones are very dressy.

dd wore this to her prom two yrs ago
she is wanting to sell it if interested
it is an 8 I think
the green is more vibrant than the photo-think granny smith applegreen

What date is the prom? I had the horrible task last year and again this year to search for prom dresses (of course they couldnt wear the same one) Last years one is lovely strapless deep purple with lace overlay with black flowers on it think its an 8 (littlewoods £50 in sale)or this years one I managed to get from tk max for £40 last week it's a 10 its cream strapless just above knee with overlay with silver flowers what area do you live in? If date doesnt clash maybe one of these 2 might be of use to you. Last years one never been worn since that night! Don't spend a fortune on one if you dont have to.

another sale bargain

theres loads on lipsy!

venusonarockbun · 02/05/2010 12:05

Thank you ladies for suggesting Lipsy. Dd is at work but I will tell her when she gets in. Disenchanted - that £35 one looks very OK to me and is a bargain.

Chocolatedays · 02/05/2010 12:16

You could look at hiring one - cheaper for a one off.

saabwoman · 03/05/2010 12:05

Thanks ladies- some ideas for us to look at!Prom is 6th July so got a while to find one. Can't believe what a "big business" it is these proms now- weddingy shops around here (Derbyshire)apparently ask which school the girl goes to before selling a dress so that nobody else turns up in the same one! Dd doesn't want anything remotely weddingy and in her words doesn't want to look like a "meringue"! Can see where she's coming from!

It might be worth looking to find out if there's a Monsoon sale shop anywhere near you. We used to have one near to us, and it was fantastic.

I have just bought my daughters prom dress from Minx. I have bought many dresses from them for myself and got my daughters dress for only £130. It needs a little alteration around the neckstrap but looks fabulous on her. All the dresses are designed by Minx and are produced in limited numbers. They even note the school that is having the prom so they don't sell the same dress to an other girl.

Holly is so excited about her prom on 25 June. Just hair, make-up, tan and nails to sort now.

trendywendy · 12/05/2010 12:06

Hmmm....are you looking for a brand new one? I sell USED dresses on eBay, but they are all checked that they are in pristine condition before I list them. I have some gorgeous ones in Jane Norman, Oasis etc
