I've got to get ds out of his trainers and into something "smart" for a wedding in a week's time

where can I find something that won't look too silly?

You are blessed that it is a summer wedding as I think it is so much easier to find summer clothes that are "smart" whilst at the same time being reasonably comfortable for little boys to wear.

I would get a pair of three quarter length shorts - possibly one of the more formal pairs from monsoon:

and a little shirt - probably collarless:

I like this one but again Monsoon have a great choice

At 6 my boys still had a pair of sandals in the summer. Assuming you are similar I would just buy his sandals for the summer and use them for the first time that weekend. I used to buy a reasonable continental make but if he is not really a sandal wearer you could get a cheaper pair e.g. from Next.

M&S Autograph sometimes have nice stuff. Smart-casual shirts and trousers.

I tend to buy more formal stuff for my 7 year old from Zara. They have great ranges of smart shorts / trousers, nice linen shirts and lots of lovely nice coloured polo shirts. I usually buy him Birkenstock sandals to wear in the summer too which look smart with shorts or some dark coloured velcro canvas shoes with trousers and generally put them through the washing machine before formal occasions to make sure that they look smartish.

My stock outfit for my boys for weddings is pale coloured trousers (stone/beige) plus a smarter shirt.
Something like these chinos plus something like this.

I think kids look a bit crazy when they're 'overdressed' and just trousers and a shirt look best.

Shoes - either school shoes (if long trousers) or sandals/doodles look fine if they are newish and still look respectable.
