can anyone recommend DIY false nails....

not pre-pared to pay £30 for a set at the salon especially as i won't be keeping them on for very long.

Revlon are good. The french polish one - they offer a couple of colours pink/peach/ivory to match your real nail beds which helps them look more natural and super easy to glue on.
