Oh no, how distressing for you. This happened to me last year, I had to go private to see a dermatologist as my GP wouldn't refer me on the NHS unless it got a lot worse. Supplements are unlikely to make much difference I think.

Mine started recovering after 6 months or so, which was about 2 months after being prescribed steroid gel by the dermatologist. THere were other people on MN suffering with similar things, try posting on General Health. I have very dark hair so it looked awful, I managed to disguise it with clips, hairband etc and got some camouflage cream from a wig shop to put on my scalp which matched my hair colour and made it look much better. couvre. Hope this helps

Definitely get an appointment with your Dr as sometimes hair loss can be due to anaemia so a blood test is needed to rule this out.

If it's not due to low iron levels then your Dr will investigate further as another possiblilty is alopecia.

If you've had a baby within the last year then losing hair is common. Some people just notice more in their hairbrush after brushing and others, myself included, have very noticeable thinning.

If your hair is long then try not to brush it too often and don't tie it back tightly. If it's looking very thin and it's long then it might be a good idea to have it cut to about shoulder length. I found that cutting my long hair to my shoulders helped it look less thin and straggly.

I also swapped my usual shampoo and conditioner to thickening products. I spent a small fortune on a variety of brands but found the Joico Body Luxe shampoo and conditioner to be the best for making my hair feel thicker and heavier but not making it feel weighed down.

Sorry, just noticed that you already have shoulder length hair. Ignore hair cut suggestion.

Did the doctor do a blood test to check your thyroid?

Rexy · 21/04/2010 19:45

Yes and also to check for anaemia. Was in tears 4 times yesterday but had work today so tried to calm. Will phone for results tomorrow and see if they are back.

Thanks for the support everyone.

Let us know how you get on Rexy. I think mine was due to a specific stressful incident, it certainly seems to be linked, but very important to check all the hormones etc. I cried and cried over mine, I know just how you feel.

If it's any help, although I lost quite a lot in the end, it did come back, and my friends and colleagues when I did tell them swore they would not have realised if I hadn't told them, so it is possible to camouflage it successfully. If you've got dark hair you could always dab mascara over the patches.

Hi Rexy,

Glad you've had the blood test and hope all is well.

Keep us updated!

Good luck

Rexy · 23/04/2010 14:26

Well the blood results are clear so Dr has prescribed me steroid cream to rub on once a day for a month and she added it may help.

I am trying not to think too much about hair loss and trying to feel positive as so far you can only see it if I part my hair.

I keep you posted though , thanx so much for your ongoing support , it means a lot.
