I Oliver pencil skirt - advice please!

Right I've been going on about this pencil skirt from Isabella Oliver for ages. I know, it's boring.

I had talked myself out of it and then linked to it on someone else's thread and am now tempted again. (Am also miserable as DP stranded in Middle East by volcano ash since last week and dc driving me insane so comfort shopping.

I put it in my shopping basket but am hesitating. It looks lovely but the model obviously doesn't have the lumps and bumps that I have. It's jersey, stretchy, and that is part of the appeal but then I think that will mean it will show every bump (thinking specfically of the bump of my tummy but also the random extra bumps at the bottom of my bottom (so to speak) - not sure if they're saddlebags as they're at the back but they're not good.

I'm 5'6, size 12 with a small waist/big hips from the front (though a sticky out tum from the side). Think it will look okay from teh front and less so from behind/in profile. Also if you tuck something into it, surely the jersey will mean that the tucked in bit of material will create bumps underneath.

Your thoughts please - I can't stretch to the 90 quid for the Marilyn skirt and the one in the sale is nice but is navy, which I don't have shoes to match.

I don't need it do I?

Hi there, I bought a very similar one from M&S a couple of weeks ago for £15. It is cheap because it is not lined, I think, but is a kind of stretch jersey and the same length as the IO one (though you can get it in different lengths). It is brilliant for work and I am really pleased with it.
I wouldn't tuck anything in though as you may get the bunching up effect.

Also I wear mine with control tights - the first time I have tried those - and they honestly hold everything in and give me size 12 figure a silhouette almost as good as that model's!

lolabug · 18/04/2010 17:14

Buy to IO one, I LOVE it too. I have their wrap dress and its totally gorgeous....

buy buy buy buy.

lolabug · 18/04/2010 17:14

I meant to say....Buy the IO one...durrr

tethersend · 18/04/2010 17:34

Meant to say on the other thread, I have a long IO skirt; like that but maxi, and the weight of the jersey is really good; IME, it's only cheap jersey which shows all the lumps and bumps.

Also, when you tuck a top in wear a wide belt; any bump from tucked in top is covered by the belt IYSWIM.

Get it

I love IO. Just bought the tank dress and it's fabulous. I have a tummy after the kids and agree that their heavy weight jersey is quite forgiving. I have also just bought pair of Figleaf control pants that look like high waisted hot pants and they would be ideal to iron out lumps if you wanted a bit of help. I own Spanx too but think the Figleaf ones a lot more comfy and minimal for every day use (and cheaper!)

NorkilyChallenged · 18/04/2010 18:15

Thanks for replies. You were supposed to be talking me out of it, tsk tsk

Tethers - I have a maxi IO skirt like this actually but it was maternity. I still wear it sometimes though it has a bit too much on the tummy rollover bit

Ooh link to the Figleaf pants, wingandaprayer?

I so don't need to spend money right now but can feel lots of buying coming on if I manage to get the dc to bed at a decent time tonight

I love that Isabella Oliver 365 skirt and would love to have one, if I weren't so fat.

pushmepullyou · 18/04/2010 21:51

It's lovely, am quite tempted myself, but think I am too short for that particular skirt length! Love the wrap dress too

Monadami · 19/04/2010 02:05

I really loved The Zip Dress too and planned to get one for when I get slim, but alas it's been discontinued and won't be reintroduced.

NorkilyChallenged · 19/04/2010 06:44

I ordered it last night. Eek.

It's ridiculous really, I could have looked for the much cheaper one Papoose mentioned in M&S and then had £40 to spare (or to spend in La Redoute who have just sent me new catalogue which is also tempting me).

But I've been wondering about this skirt for ages so I'll try it and see what I think. Free delivery and free returns so worth a try

Will report back. Am hoping I'm not too short for it!

Just got an email saying skirt not available til 17th May [petulant]

That takes all the instant gratification excitement out of it. I'll have gone off it by the time it arrives! Might try that M&S one on instead and cancel my order.

I bet it's this blimmin volcano. Causing nothing but trouble.

Btw, thanks for links wingandaprayer

jamaisjedors · 20/04/2010 20:53

Glad you got it but a bit annoying that it's not due til 17th - maybe it will arrive earlier and they are just covering themselves?

All you IO lovers, what do you think of :

the asymetric dress for a wedding (guest!)

I also love the lauren trousers but fear they would swamp me as a petite 5ft4?

wingandprayer · 22/04/2010 13:25

Got an IO discount code this morning - 15% off, free delivery, free returns when you spend over £49 - came with Ocado delivery

Anyhoo, thought you could cancel skirt order then re-order it and save yourself few quid - migt help you get over that late delivery...

OCADO15 at checkout apprently, got to use it before May 16th

NorkilyChallenged · 22/04/2010 14:32

Ooh ooh ooh, thank you so much Wingandprayer! I was disappointed as missed out on a 20% code that I saw too late so this would be GREAT!

Will cancel my order and start again.

Jamaisjedors (oh how that describes me perfectly!) - I think the asymmetric dress is lovely and v sexy (I'd never dare but I think it's really nice). And the Lauren trousers - I've had my eye on them but agree that they look like they'd be too long.
