How long does my hair need to be for the mn haircut?

pookamoo · 12/04/2010 12:54

I am growing out a Bad Fringe. The rest of my hair is long (below shoulder length) and straight.
My Bad Fringe is now like a long layer, the longest parts just reach my ears. Can I do teh mn haircut now or do I need to wait a bit longer?
Am feeling a bit straggly round the edges!
Thanks.

I'd really advise going to a hairdressers - sorry! But diy haircuts are rarely good.

Tiredmumno1 · 12/04/2010 19:53

Get it chopped just above chin and have it layered, it will make you feel great

pookamoo · 14/04/2010 10:44

I'm WAY too scared to have it chopped! I haven't had it shorter than shoulder length since I was 12!

Also think DH would probably cry!

Can I just ask...

What the jiggins is an MN haircut?

pookamoo · 14/04/2010 11:39

It's a kind of DIY haircut. There is a thread and a video and several MNers have had success with it. I am prepared to risk it... but not quite prepared to go short!

Picture of dd1 with the MN haircut on profile. She did end up with some funky layers, but it looked good. Her hair was long. I wouldn't fancy chancing it on any lengh above the sholders TBH.

mangoandlime · 14/04/2010 11:55

Aha, Okay, with you now.

I did have enough hair for it but a couple of months ago I had it cropped, best thing I've done in ages!

RedBlueRed · 14/04/2010 12:58

Oh Christ. I've just done it on my hair.

Don't like it.

Dialling hairdressers while typing one handed.

Whoamireally · 14/04/2010 12:59

What do you do once you've done the MN cut? Because presumably you have trouble getting it all back into a bunch to cut it again?

pookamoo · 14/04/2010 13:30

We need JackBauer on this thread really, has anyone seen her recently? Can you point her in this direction?

Hello. Have been offline for a bit but sounds like you coudl do it. my hair was on my shoulders originally and the front layters wqere around ear length.
You might need to do 2 ponytails though, one at the front and one right at the back BUT DONT CUT THE BACK ONE TOO SHORT or you will get a mullet

RedBlueRed · 14/04/2010 14:37

A swift trip the the hairdressers and 1 hour later my hair no longer looks like an eighties mullet.

I don't recommend you do it. I really don't!

JackBauer · 14/04/2010 19:37

I think the trick is not to care. I really don't care what my hair looks like, I have hairbands and hats and have been known to have it supershort so it is not that big an issue to me if it goes wrong

(on my profile is the colour it went after I mixed 2 different colour and brands of hair dye, just to see what would happen)
If you love your hair and need it to look styled allthe time this is probably not the way to go!

pookamoo · 14/04/2010 19:45

Hmm... I don't really care... and I can always get it sorted if I absolutely have to.

Stand by... will put up before and after pics!

JackBauer- I think I have only just realised which MN you used to be!

pookamoo · 14/04/2010 20:21

Well... I did it. Have put up before and after pics but I was outside in the garden and it was a bit windy, so it's not easy to see. But I am happy with it. To be honest, I don't think I would have got any more if I had gone and paid for it!

DH videoed me doing it We could have made some money from you've been framed if it went horribly wrong!

Very nice pookamoo!
I have my beofre/during/after pics on here somewhere if I can find them, they involved wine though so I was a littel less freshfaced than you

not sure what you mean falafel, have been jack for ages now, was chirpygirl before that but then my bird (who I was named after) died and I didn';t feel so chirpy. So who did you think I was?!

RedBlueRed · 14/04/2010 21:42

Hmm, yours looks way better than mine did.

I have quite 'big hair' though so the short layers on top really stood out despite having been straightened. It really did look like a mullet but more this.

FalafelAtYourFeet · 15/04/2010 08:15

JB- oh, am wrong, I thought you were another poster I used to chat to about various things years ago
but you could wave back anyway

(seeing as how you asked twice)

(my message looked a bit chippy but wasn't intentional, was genuinely curious)
