When is it acceptable to wear wellies?

because I realised during the snow that my current pair were purchased for a guide camp whne I was about 15, so am considering shelling out for a decent pair to last the next 20 years

but at £60+ I want to get lots of wear out of them

I live in a small rural-ish market town. I don't have a dog. Can I wear wellies any wet day? On wet days but only to the park/woods?

And must they be dull conservative Hunter types, or can I have colours and/or patterns?

I wear wellies all the time. Pink ones with jellybeans on. I tend to walk into town via the canal path which is muddy, but once in town people probably wouldn't know I had. They are great though, and they didn't cost anything near £60.

I do not belong in this section though so YMMV!

CMOTdibbler · 06/04/2010 12:50

For super boots you want Aigle. I don't think Hunters are as good as they were, and currently sport a pair of Countrywide look alikes which cost a tenner, and are lasting well.

I live in a similar sort of town, and wellies are always acceptable wear here. But patterned wellies usually denote visiting city dwellers. Although an exception may be made for Joules wellies as they are sold in the feed merchants

wastwinsetandpearls · 06/04/2010 12:52

I wear my wellies all the time, usually because if I want to walk to the pub, local shop I have to trek across farmland to get there.

Mine are plain though.

nowherewoman · 06/04/2010 12:55

I wear mine to take the bin out, and at festivals. Does that help at at all?

MadreInglese · 06/04/2010 12:59

in the rain,
in the mud,
at a festival,
in the country,
when camping,
in a field,
on a farm.....

I love patterned wellies but go with what you like

MadreInglese · 06/04/2010 12:59

"patterned wellies usually denote visiting city dwellers"

MissWooWoo · 06/04/2010 13:06

good too for wearing on the beach late autumn/winter and early spring. Really!

Marne · 06/04/2010 13:10

I have spotty wellies from 'joules', i wear them for walking the dog and i have worn them for the school run when its raining hard.

I wan't some hunter wellies but i need to wear my others out first.

greedygoose · 06/04/2010 14:17

My Joules wellies have all been crappy...too many wet feet here! am saving for Hunters, cannot bear those brown fabricy ones sorry!

bellissima · 06/04/2010 14:28

When you were squelching round Corfe Castle on Saturday. Only you weren't

I've got some basic Dunlops (ie the ones I left at home). Tried the Hunters but I'm between sizes somehow in them and also I found the heel a bit weird for wellies.

wastwinsetandpearls · 06/04/2010 14:38

I have got some hunters they are a nightmare size wise so am going to put them on ebay as I left it far too long to returnt them. Eventually will buy a new pair.

cheesesarnie · 06/04/2010 15:31

when you will ruin your other shoes is when its acceptable.

mine are crap but we live in cornwall and go on muddy walks(thats just school run) etc.my other shoes are far to pretty to ruin!

MrsBadger · 06/04/2010 15:49

but my other shoes are leather jodhpur boots with goretex lining

[shame]

TrinityIsFuckingTrying · 06/04/2010 15:52

erm, whenever you need to wear them...

and I'm no city dweller and I have light blue stripy ones but I lust after pink flowery or jelly bean ones

ZZZenAgain · 06/04/2010 15:55

You don't need hunters, get what you like and wear them where you like.

In a small country town on a wet day? Why not?

Macdog · 06/04/2010 15:55

I'd recommend the Derwent Muck-Boot TYhe neoprene is lovely and warm in the cold and wet, and hugs your leg so the welly doesn't slip about.
They are insanely comfortable to wear

ZZZenAgain · 06/04/2010 15:57

honestly I#d never bat an eyelid to see someone in wellies in wet weather or in a muddy field etc.

Maybe in a fancy restaurant I might find it odd but really who cares? Better than ruining good leather shoes in muck and wet

BirdyArms · 06/04/2010 15:58

I have navy hunters which I think look reasonabley smart and I wear them any wet day. Or rather any wet day that I'm wearing skinny jeans or a skirt, I can't get wider legged trousers in them - I have healthy sized calves but not huge ones!

Francagoestohollywood · 06/04/2010 16:00

I live in a big city and I'd say you can wear your wellies whenever you fancy.

cruelladepoppins · 06/04/2010 20:09

Another vote here for wearing your wellies and sparing your good shoes!

tulpe · 07/04/2010 08:28

Yep, definitely wear them any rainy/post-rainy day.

The Hunter Neoprenes are a much better fit than standard Hunters. They are warmer, have better non-slip soles and not the weird shaped heel they have on the standard ones. They also run true to size with just a little extra room for thicker socks if required. I can comfortably wear my ski socks beneath but equally they do not rub or slip when I have had bare feet inside (this might seem an odd combo but when the dog needs to go she needs to go, iyswim and don't always have time to get properly attired!)

helyg · 07/04/2010 08:44

I live in the country, and have spotty wellies

I wear them quite a lot, I walk the school run and to work so if it is wet I'll wear them (I live in Wales so rain is not uncommon). Obviously I take other shoes to work to change into!

I also wear them a lot at weekends as we go for lots of walks in the forestry etc. Also when I'm gardening.

I don't think I'd wear them into town though, but that's just me.
