Okay- got some red polish today- Malvala New Delhi- red but slightly maroon rather than pillar box.
Have tried applying and it looks awful. Been round the dges with cotton bud dipped in remover and it just smudged.

What 's the trick- apart from a steady hand and endless patience?

apply one stroke down the middle of the nail - that's what I do and is usually enough

i've been trying the "3 strokes" and it's all over my fingers!

don't worry about getting them on your skin, wait a while then pick off the excess in the bath.

Agree with southeastastra - I always paint my nails before having a bath, the excess comes off easily if when you get it on your skin.

thanksladies- I think I am getting better! have decided that one coat rather than two helps, as does leaving a tiny gap down sides of nails rather than painting my fingers as well. But take point about rubbing it off in bath- will try that too!
