Is a maxi dress a really bad idea if you are --short-- ahem petite?

As in title really. I can see how brilliantly easy these must be for the summer. Just throw it on and you're off. But I am only 5'1, so is it a no go area? Anyone know?

I'm short too, and am debating the same thing. I see maxi dresses on petite slebs (Cheryl Cole, Nicole Richie) and they seem lovely. Perhaps with a delicate print and heels they'd look good. I'm not brave enough to try though.

Maybe we are the only short mumsnetters, Sofaqueen? Have long suspected that the rest of them are all tall gazelle like creatures.

Eshermummy is a fan of maxis and is petite.

I'm 5 ft and have tried various ones on but just can't get my head around this look.

Do think they need to be fairly slinky though if you're small as some are just too voluminous.

Somebody recommended a H&M girls one on here the other day.

Unless you are very, very slim with v limited norkage, I think they should be avoided. I am 5'2 and a size 10-12 but I would look like a mushroom in one.

In Greece last summer I saw many people wearing maxi dresses and only two of them (in a fortnight) looked nice in them imho. One was tiny and about a size 4 (and v beautiful) and the other was a v tall teenager.

notyummy · 04/04/2010 14:34

I think fairly fitted with wedges should be perfectly wearable.

fuzzywuzzy · 04/04/2010 14:53

I'm short (altho in denial), the ones I wear tend to skim my silhouette, otherwise it does look like one is wearing a tent!!!!

BlameItOnTheBogey · 04/04/2010 14:56

fuzzy; can you link to the kind of one you wear?

Thanks to everyone else too for the replies. Def want to avoid the mushroom look....

I think I'm going to try a couple on in a lunch hour this week and see just how horrendous they look on me (5 ft 4, size 12, 34DD norks!). Hopefully they'll look ok!

traceybath · 04/04/2010 15:36

Just think Nicole Richie - she looks fab in them. 5ft4 is not short!

fuzzywuzzy · 04/04/2010 15:40

I got this one recently

fuzzywuzzy · 04/04/2010 15:44

I got soe lovely ones from Asos too, cant find them on there now, but one was fitted along the torso and then had a panel added to the hem to flow out it's a jersey material and fits beautifully, I've also got one in black also jersey material it's fish tail design.

fuzzywuzzy · 04/04/2010 15:48

arrrgghhhh this one

traceybath · 04/04/2010 15:49

I am 5'2 and have this dress

www.polyvore.com/monsoon_accessorize_tokyo_print_maxi/thing?id=6709226

Gok Wan recommended it and I fell in love with it.

I love it. Not too voluminous as recommended by others on this thread.

Have to wear it with wedges though as too long for flats.
